The Hornets came out victorious in their home opener, downing the Kings 97-92 ( box | recap ). It was a tight contest throughout. The Kings were a jump shooting team early while the Hornets got plenty of points at the free-throw line. Sacto appeared the more poised team through the middle quarters and started to control the boards while the Hornets couldn't get anything working consistently. The bench got New Orleans off to a solid start in the fourth and Chris Paul and Emeka Okafor were money down the stretch to seal it.
Let's jump into some bullets:
- It was a great battle between Chris Paul and Kings' rookie Tyreke Evans. Apparently Evans had a rough debut against OKC's Russell Westbrook on Wednesday, but he didn't show any signs of a hangover. He was physical with CP much of the night, more than willing to push back, post Chris up and drive right at him. Evans' height seemed to give CP some problems at both ends of the floor, and we saw a few uncharacteristic mistakes out of the world's greatest point guard. But you knew it would be Paul having the last laugh. He scored 13 in the fourth quarter, including four clutch free throws, and finished with 31 points. Evans, meanwhile, saw his night end badly when he bricked a three and got blocked in the lane in the final minute.
- Emeka Okafor was rock solid: 11 points (5-8 FGs), 13 boards and 4 blocks. It was his arm blocking Evans with seven seconds left, and he also got a piece of what would have been a game-tying triple by Kevin Martin right at the death. Great read by Okafor on that last one, since Chris Paul had been screened out of the play, leaving Martin running free to the corner. Oh, and let's not forget that huge put-back jam Okafor had with 44 seconds left. I'm loving the big man's work so far this season. Looking forward to seeing what he can bring when his conditioning is all the way there.
- Big red flag: no PT for the Hornets rookies. Marcus Thornton was inactive again, while Darren Collison never got to take off his sweats. Byron will be getting a phone call from George Shinn any day now: "Yeah, Byron, remember what we talked about in the offseason?"
- With the Hornets trailing 72-75, Byron went with this unit to start the fourth quarter: Bobby Brown, Peja Stojakovic, James Posey, Darius Songaila and Hilton Armstrong. That was eerily similar to the disastrous lineup we saw in San Antonio (just swap Songaila for West). As noted by At The Hive, the problem there is that you have a bunch of guys who can't create their own shot playing with a shoot-first point guard. I was waiting for the bottom to fall out when I saw that tonight, but surprisingly, it didn't. Brown wasn't as trigger-happy as he was in San Antonio, while Songaila was able to make some moves, draw and dish for open shots. That unit showed some fight defensively, too. The score was 80-80 at the seven-minute mark, when Byron started bringing the big guns back in.
- Rebounding was a problem. The Kings had a 24-23 edge on the glass at halftime, but would finish with a 41-33 advantage. They had 21 offensive rebounds, compared to just 10 for the Hornets. Byron commented after the game that his guys were "watching the bird" too much, rather than finding a man to put a body on when the ball was in the air. Luckily though, the Kings were just 2-of-11 on second chance field goals.
- Helping balance out that rebounding differential: the Hornets were +12 on free-throw attempts, and held the Kings' to 37.5 percent shooting, 30.4 percent in the second half.
- I was disappointed to see Julian Wright come out of the game in the third quarter. He was making all sorts of good things happen there for a stretch. While his teammates seemed to be getting distracted by the officials, JuJu was busy banking in jumpers, hustling for offensive rebounds and making deflections to save certain scores by Sacramento. Glad to report very little hesitation and indecision from him so far this season.
- Morris Peterson has some work to do. I don't have a lot of faith in him right now. He wasn't all bad tonight, but too often he left Kevin Martin open for jumpers (luckily K-Mart wasn't feeling it; 9-of-29 shooting for 20 points), while missing a bunch of open looks himself. Double your poison.
- Fifteen combined shot attempts for Peja and Posey is about right. They just need to hit more than five of them.
I didn't get too down on the Hornets after Wednesday's loss, and I won't get too high on them after tonight's win. Needing 48 minutes to beat the Sacramento Kings only further proves that this team has a long way to go. I'm optimistic we'll see them playing some fine basketball later in the season though. Okafor and Songaila have already impressed me, Ike Diogu can't be any worse than Hilton Armstrong, and those rookies might make some noise once George makes that phone call.
Boston on Sunday.

Booo to CST. Is there some reason they feel like not showing games in HD? They have the equipment, we've all seen it. Use It! Game looked and sounded horrible. Very blurry, and the sound had a lot of static to it, like the mics were turned way too loud or something. Way to do the opening night broadcast and get people excited.
At least we get the win. Okafor was looking nice down the stretch.
What's with CP3 and the mouthpiece this year? I know Denver was rough on him last season, is he gearing up for some abuse?

Great report Niall. Some observations I made:
--Great hot start for Peja in the first half (7 points in the first 2 minutes of him on the court) but fizzled the rest of the game. The Sharp-Shooting Serbian finished with 10 but on 3-9 shooting.
--I don't know any other way to say this: Mo Pete has to go; 7 points on 3-8 shooting, including 1-5 from downtown. I knew the Butler trade was gonna bite us in the SG position.
--No playing time for our rookies, as Niall pointed out. What irks me more is Thornton, who we traded up for in the second round, is inactive for the second straight game. But this is expected because Byron Scott has a long history of never playing rookies immediately.
--Need I remind everyone that Chad Ford predicts Byron Scott as the first coach to be fired during the season.
--Armstrong's play still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, only 3 points for our backup center and those 3 points came from the charity stripe. He only took one shot attempt. Here's to Ike Diogu, when healthy, taking over the backup center spot.
--Emeka Okafor made a huge statement tonight with another double-double of 11 points and 13 boards (including 10 in the first half), but a much bigger statement with his dunk to take the lead and his game-saving block on Martin's potential-tying shot. The Okafor/Chandler trade has already paid off.
--Tyreke Evans really impressed me and showed why he was the fourth pick in the draft.
--Nocioni is the type of bench player that the Hornets need; 16 points off the bench including 3-6 from downtown.
--This team should have shut down the rebuilding Kings early in the fourth quarter and I imagine a tough practice Saturday and Sunday morning to prepare themselves for Boston on Sunday @ 5PM.

our rookies can't learn at a fast pace when just sitting on the bench! maybe a phone call from shinn makes byron wake up. hilton should be a bench player in the d-league!peterson is almost already done and he's still starting? of all the starting shoting guards in the league right now, i can't see one of them just like peterson..need to start giving our rookies playng time especially thorton so that he can learn much faster and maybe able to replace peterson in the starting line-up as peterson will be worn out in the middle of the season.brown over collison? brown can't be pargo.pargo has a higher basketball IQ and has the extreme confidence than bobby brown for the hornets.can't wait for diogu and marks to return and put hilton in the d-league.

We need joe johnson. I know it's early in season. But isn't he going to be a free agent next year. He would make our starting 5 amazing. Am I hoop dreaming? If so it's deffinately mo pete induced.

Actually Arod, a more feasible possibility is Rudy Gay. I don't remember if it was if it was Marc Stein or John Hollinger (it may have even been Bill Simmons, which would make it less credible), but they said that if Memphis believes they won't be able to resign him and/or him and Mayo can't share the shots that Memphis may be in fire sale mode and willing to take well below market value. I think Gay would fit way better than Johnson anyways, but in reality neither will happen. Johnson especially. Atlanta will be in a playoff race and are not about to give up their go to guy.

Yeah, Bill Simmons even wrote this about him: ["Gay was miserable last season, and that was before Iverson and Randolph showed up. The Grizzlies didn't sign him to an extension. He's the fourth option on a bad team. Right now, he's the sneakiest trade asset in the league. You know what's going to happen in January, when the Grizz are 7-23, Iverson and Z-Bo aren't speaking, Mayo is complaining behind the scenes and Gay looks more bummed out than Vivica Fox when Larry David told her, "Yeah, I'm going to need you only for the first two episodes"? You will be able to get Gay for the right price. Just save the Grizzlies $3 million, give them someone half as good, take one of their bad contracts as window dressing and throw in a No. 1 pick so the deal looks better than it is, and Chris Wallace is going to say, "I should probably shop this around, but screw it, I'll just panic and say yes."
(Translation: If you're looking for the most likely candidate for this winter's "How the hell did Playoff Team X get that guy for 50 cents on the dollar -- this is unbelievable!" trade, it's Gay.)"]
Isn't he more of a 3 than a 2 though?

Am I the only one who's wondering how old Posey is actually looking?? He should be inactive. He is not really healthy I guess. I'm pleased with JuJu and Okafor. Both are doing what they suppose to do. Defensive rotation, rebounding and the play of the second unit are the most concerns. I'm fine with that so far, there are a lot of games to improve left. I don't like Bobby Brown, his bodylanguage is bad and he refuses to push the tempo.

Forgot to mention the scariest thing seen at the Hive last night. That was when Hilton Armstrong caught the ball at the top of the circle and spent what seemed like an eternity looking to pass it off. With nobody open, he launched the jumper, and missed it.
The stuff of nightmares.
@ Tobi: Yeah, doesn't look like Posey is in great shape. He's not giving us much out there. I think it was Jeff Van Gundy on Wednesday who said Posey is more suited to play power forward right now, because he can't stay in front of opposing wings.

Fairly happy with this win. Still a lot of problems for this team, but I believe most of them will be corrected with time.
I too was disappointed to see JuJu come out in the third, but I thought Byron showed a lot of confidence in Wright by putting him back in for the final stretch, a move that payed off big-time.
And yeah, Posey looks bad.

Posey was recovering from surgery during the off-season. It's not that surprising he didn't come into camp in perfect health. He still had some nice moments out there last night.
We have no cap space over the summer. Signing Joe Johnson won't happen.
The Hornets may be able to trade for a big-money wing using Peja's/Morris's/Songaila's expiring contracts, but probably not until the trade deadline next year.

Hopefully the Bugs can learn from this win.
Byron Scott's excuse that Thornton doesn't know the offense well nough is poppycock. Run down the court, go to the wing, stand there and grow roots.... hell, I can do that!!!!! That is EXACTLY what both Devin Brown, AND Morris Peterson do. Ok, ok, Peterson goes to the corner, but still.
Here's to Ike and Kiwi's speedy return. You have got to rebound the basketball better than that. Boston is going to kill us on Sunday. Armstrong is an oxygen thief.

And folks, don't expect a miracle with landing a wing player this season or next. The reality is the Hornets have almost $30 million tied up for the next two seasons in aging wing players that are WAAAAAYYYY past their prime. Here's to 2012.
But if I were a dreamer, I'd take a guy like Rudy Gay or John Salmons.

John Salmons would be a great fit for our SG spot, but there's just no way Chicago is giving him up :/

I'm definitely trying to be realistic, Mikey. But we did essentially up our post-game this season with the whole Okafor-Songalia-Ike situation, so perhaps we can pick up some bad contracts while similarly dumping some of ours. 2010 will be a big offseason for a few teams, so maybe we can go under-the-radar and pick up a sleeper.

Question of the Day:
Why isn't the 17 foot Assassin hitting 17 foot jump shots?
David West doesn't seem like himself.

@Juncti - I can't understand myself about Chris Paul and the mouth guard.
Its like going to work in your garden with bare hands and then brushing your teeth with your fingers and then going out and working in your garden with your bare hands and then brushing your teeth with your fingers and going out in the garden etc., etc. This is a sure way to get sick - whats with the Hornets medical staff? I see others in the NBA doing it too - geez stop it!
Mouth guards are great but leave them in! If you have to take them out you really need to wash your hand first - now who has time for that? I don't know, maybe these mouth guards have been made with some kind of antibacterial stuff.
And one more comments on the rookies. Watching the Thunder on the last two games they do play their rookies and from their comments they have learned alot from being abused by the long timers. Kevin Martin gave The Thunder rookies some great lessons. So far so good for The Thunder. Right now it looks like the bench is as good as the starters.
And - I think David West looks good and the same - its Chris Paul who looks different to me. Like he doesn't look that interested then he gets tired of it all and takes over the game. I think who ever said they thought Chris might go and surround himself with a team might have said something.
Its to early in the season but playing The Celtics will give us a chance to see what they are really made of.

Yeah I agree to a point with the pick setting. Chris Paul and Okafor have sort of have pick and rolls, but I haven't really seen an isolation just for them two to play a two man game like Tyson & Paul did.
