I missed most of the first half of the game, since League Pass has yet to play a game on the channel it says its going to play it on - making life hard on TiVO and me. Anyways, I still had some observations, and if you feel anything is missing, Mr. Kennedy's started producing his own Game Recaps in the Journal Section. Take a gander.
On to the bullets:
- The defeat tonight can be laid at the feet of the Hornets defense once more. Believe it or not, but in general it takes longer for a good defense to gel than a good offense to gel. So far, however, its hard to even see the makings of a good defense. Though the perimeter is hardly a stout bastion of defense, its been the interior defense that has killed the Hornets this season. Time and again, the Knicks ran a simple delayed pick and roll, and over and over the big man who should be coming over to help didn't materialize. The result - a layup line. West and Okafor just aren't communicating and aren't covering each other, and they made David Lee look like David Robinson.
- Paul's shooting has been crazy to start the season. It's a shame it's been wasted. I know some people won't like it, but I also like the way he's been managing the game. For the first half, he tries to get the rest of the team going, after the half, he goes nuts. Right now, that might cause growing pains, but I think it will pay off in the long run.
- Bold prediction: Darren Collison will see minutes next game. I have nothing to base this on but hope and another poor showing from Bobby Brown and Devin Brown that saw Byron curtail their minutes.
- Peja continues to throw flame from the perimeter, going 3-6 from deep. The worries during the pre-season seem long gone now. Of course, the worries during the pre-season were kinda silly to begin with. Peja was rehabbing all summer, and didn't pick up a basketball until training camp began. That's bound to put some rust on your jumper - even if you are a crazy good jumpshooter. It probably also doesn't hurt that he says he's free of anti-inflammatory medicine and painkillers for the first time in years.
- I don't think Songaila is being used to his strengths. To me he seems to be the sort of player you get the ball to in the high post and send cutters. Instead he's being given the ball at the three-point line and cutters are sent. He's not a threat to shoot from there, so the guy guarding him simply steps back and impedes the passing lanes.
- West needs to box out and get his hands on some boards. He also needs to rotate faster. I'm one of the biggest West apologists around - because I think his defense is no where near as bad as its claimed, but he's hurting the Hornets on the interior right now.
That's about it. Next game is the Mavericks coming to visit. Hopefully we'll see some improvement in the interior defense and boardwork.

Hey Ryan, great recap and thanks for the plug. I hope and pray Collison plays on Wednesday and Peja was good from deep. Could we see a change at the starting SG position if MoPete doesn't improve?

Didnt see the game as I was occupied by more pleasant endeavors this evening. But this is the site of the 2008/2009 Hornets' demise so it's fitting that we suffer a crushing defeat there again so early this season.

i am really encouraged by peja. i thought he was done after last season, but playing 25-30 min off the bench seems to suit him.
agree completely on the interior defense. guys just dont rotate at all. i think time will help, but only so much. the hornets just dont have any bigs-other than okafor- who are defensively talented and inclined.

also, i know juju had some bad moments last night but how does he play only 2 minutes more than mo-pete? he's been playing well early on and needs to be on the floor close to 30 minutes a night. he is easily one of our best 5.

I think if we loose 17 more games we might get a coach change. So 3 down 17 more to go!

I think Juju came out after Duhon intercepted his ill-advised cross-court-pass and never came back in. That's a typical Byron Scott decision. Posey and Peterson didn't show up so far, but he would never leave them out after a simple turnover!! Okafor is still figuring out how to play team defense, I guess the Bobcats' playbook hasn't such a chapter at all, so he has to adjust. I believe West has a history of slow starts, so I'm still optimistic about the near future.

In an aspiring quote from the venerable Antoine Walker: "I don't know what I'm doing, I have no idea what my role is."
Ike D, you are our last hope (since coach Scott doesn't use rookies). Garland on the map.

To touch on what Tobi said about team defense, they need to talk more to each other. Verbal communication helps a lot. And a few times I saw CP while they were headed to the defensive end yell "GET BACK, GET BACK!". He's usually very verbal on the defensive end which also makes him a pretty good defender. Some people only want to point to his steals but he brings more than that on the defensive end.

After seeing the firs few games my thoughts are that we desperately need some help at the 2 position. Mo just looks awful....old, flat, terrible d. JuJu is not ready....he is Darius Miles 2.0 in a lot of ways(still better than mo at this point) I am frustrated as well with our reliance upon the 3 at the end of the shot clock....Bobby B jackin em up from 26 feet with 3 seconds left doesn't fly with me at all.....attack the rim already and good things will happen. The other is the reliance upon the high screen and roll. If we could just get someone to set a pick for a guard under the rim so he can roll out and shoot a baseline jumper once in awhile that would be nice....but mo cant get around and square up in time. How could we land Rudy Gay? we need a wing guy who can shoot....

Wojnarowski, @ Yahoo
Long article about Paul being super frustrated so far this season. Bashes Shinn pretty relentlessly and calls the Hornets practice facility "a dumpy community center" (anybody been to the facility at the Alario Center? That seems kind of harsh.) He's also not too keen with Rondo's punkish behavior on Sunday and provides more insight on what actually happened. Apparently Ray Allen was so turned off by Rondo's antics (Rondo told Paul he would never win a ring) that he went over the the Bees' locker room in apology. Painful read but the added insight is nice. I'm wondering how many of these feel sorry for Chris Paul or CP wants out articles we're going to have to read before the end of the season. I'm looking forward to playing the Celts again. CP might drop 50 on that punk.

@LSUhornet17, what is up with these people? LMAO! I'm not reading that crap because basically once you've read them you've read them all. I doubt Wojo or whatever his name has ever been to the Alario himself. And you're wondering how many of these feel sorry for Paul or Paul wants out articles are we going to read? Many. As long as he's in Hornets uniform we're going to be reading many. People want him out of New Orleans so bad it's crazy. I mean you'd think someone *** in their bowl of gumbo when they visited the city or something. But let me say EFF EM ALL. As for Rondo, no, he doesn't respect Paul or his game. It must be easy to not have to respect anyone when you've won a championship and your head has gotten big. But I'll bet Allen, Pierce and KG respect CP. I'll bet you that.

I have an encouraging thought. Everyone remember when Mike James won the backup PG in preseason last year? Remember how fast he played his way to the end of the bench (and eventually off the team)? Remembering this coupled with Brown's declining minutes against NY made me a little happier about the situation. I'm drawing some definite correlations between the two situations, and I think Ryan is 100% right in his prediction that we will see Collison pretty soon. Now if Byron can just make the same jump with Mo/Devin....
