The Hornets played the Raptors evenly for the first, second and fourth quarters tonight. It was the third quarter that killed them. Up 56-51 ninety seconds into the second half, the Hornets then could only watch as Toronto took off on a 32-7 run. The Raps dropped 8-of-10 triples during that stretch and never looked back. 107-90 was the final score ( box | recap ).
Chris Paul came through with another big game for the Hornets, finishing with 21 points (8-13 FGs), 18 assists, 7 boards, 2 steals and just one turnover. Big numbers like that from CP used to be a nice consolation in a loss, but these days it's just depressing. He's playing out of this world, and the Hornets are still getting spanked. Word is he didn't stick around to talk to the media after the game either. This woeful start to the season must be killing him.
Jumping into some bullets:
- When the Raptors weren't lighting it up from deep in the third quarter, they were playing some zone defense that the Hornets had trouble cracking. And when they weren't in that zone, they did a nice job crowding the middle and recovering to challenge the Hornets shooters. There were holes there for our wings to drive off the catch, but alas, most of our wings can't drive.
- The Raps also did a solid job defending the pick and roll, hedging hard with a big and having an extra man help enough to cover West fading or Okafor rolling.
- Chris Bosh: 27 points (9-9 FGs) and 7 rebounds. He showed the entire offensive arsenal tonight. Post moves, fade-aways, hook shots, as well as a three pointer and plenty of hard drives that got him to the free throw line. I was impressed with his intensity and focus on the defensive end, too. Truly a great player.
- Julian Wright, Morris Peterson, James Posey and Emeka Okafor were almost invisible out there tonight. JuJu got dunked on hard by Bosh at one point, which served him right for playing lazy help defense.
- Silver lining: the rookies got some burn. Unfortunately it was only two minutes of garbage time, but it's progress. Collison looked nervous out there and made some mistakes on both ends, while Thornton missed a jumper but did score on an offensive rebound.
- Rajon Rondo was right about one thing: Chris Paul does have the ball in his hands an awful lot. I'd be willing to bet that the Hornets make a lot more passes per offensive trip when Paul is out of the game. Not that they score more as a result, but I wonder if the offense would be more successful if the same type of ball movement happened when Chris was in the game.
- The Hornets shot 14 free throws in the first half. The didn't make one trip to the line for the first 15 minutes of the second half.
- Bobby Brown was back to his chucking ways in the fourth quarter. I like him much better when he's only shooting open, spot-up threes, or taking the ball hard to the rack.
Worth noting that Byron Scott was late to his usual post-game press conference. I can only assume he was chewing guys out in the locker room. With the media, he mainly spoke about the lack of energy and effort on display by the Hornets tonight, which he said was surprising to him since he only put the team through a light practice yesterday. He didn't seem too keen on accepting responsibility for the problem either: "Energy and effort is inside you. It's not something you can coach or teach."
I think it's time to seriously question whether the players have quit on Byron Scott. He wasn't wrong about the lack of energy and effort tonight. I didn't see any fire from our guys in the third quarter when the Raptors were busy stepping on their throats. That's a problem that has nothing to do with integrating six new players into the system. You can blame poor defensive rotations and mistimed passes on the summer shake-up, but it doesn't explain the players' lack of emotion when they were getting their asses handed to them after halftime. Even Chris Paul seemed unusually accepting of what was going on, almost like he was saying to himself "What's the point?" Not a good sign.
Lakers on Sunday.

You know, besides the rookie thing and the Devin Brown thing -- BTW, where was he at the game? Totally MIA on the bench, what's that about?-- I haven't been a big Byron Scott hater. And I hate to say this so early. And I know CP and the guys like and respect him as a guy who's won championships and a likeable guy... BUT.
I'm kind of there too.

I'm not real high on Scott right now. But I don't think the team has quit on him. They got thrown off rhythm by several offensive fouls in a row, which they tend to do, and, unfortunately, at the same time, got punched in the mouth by a barrage of 3s. They just had no answer and never recovered from the shellshock. Not a good loss, but I think it happens.
Sadly, I remember when it was Peja and Mo doing that kind of damage. Maybe soon it will be Lil' Buckets and Peja doing it.

I think Byron Scott is taking a bunch of undo blame. The Hornets just don't have a good team this year and people have the blinders on. Outside of CP, Okafor, and West(who has to be overrated) they have a bunch of guys that would probably be great off the bench for any of the contenders but when you have a bunch of 6th men what do you expect? Just take the time to compare this roster to the others in the West and see if you really think this team is good enough to be anything more than a first round exit(at best).
The Hornets have moved laterally for 2 years since they got to the second round while the rest of the league has continually upgraded. Basically this year they were counting on rookies(Collison, Thornton), Ike Diogu(who for some reason has fallen out of every rotation he's been in), and Songaila and B. Brown(more bench guys or fifth men) to make them better than last year, did anyone think they'd really make the Hornets any better. Does CP3 REALLY think this team can compete with the rest of the teams in the WEST? They're in the worst spot they can be, not bad enough to get a really good rook and not good enough for their fans to care. This is where teams are before they start rebuilding.

I have to say I was very dissapointed in our defensive effort. That barrage of threes would be expected from any team because they were all open. I stopped watching in the third b/c i was tired of them shooting wide open threes.

Gerry V. kind of threw the team under the bus. He asked leading questions about the team's lack of energy, it being uncoachable and not communicating on defense. Is he on Byron's payroll? How about a question about how to adjust to a run like that as a coach?
I'm not saying I don't blame the players, but it seems to me the media should be looking at all angles.

maybe we should retroactively apologize to bill simmons?
@tony- spot on regarding the talent level. bower has just made the wrong moves. what he needs to do is just let the awful contracts expire. no quick fixes- look at the mess cleveland is in.

Very depressing game. Byron followed up his best coaching performance of the year with a non-performance.
When CP3 is shooting, it opens uo easier shots for the remainder of the team. I don't think he took a shot in the third quarter, and maybe 2 in the fourth. If it was due to defensive adjustments, then we need to figure out how to counter.
I had the feeling that David West was the key to this game, and that when he was out we got smoked. Songalia got abused by Bosh. I haven't looked at the +- to verify.....
Several times a year we seem to allow a normally average (or worse) 3-point-shooting team to have their best night ever. Most of those threes were not wide open, unlike the San Antonio loss.
Hilton sucked less than ususal, after a slow start. He seems to be making progress mentally.
JuJu, on the other hand looks lost. Devin Brown looked the best I've seen all year! I was screaming for Marcus once we got down by 20. He may have had our only offensive rebound and putback of the game....

Something's amiss. Either they've given up on Byron Scott; they've given up on themselves; or some combination thereof. The body language says it all. Personally, I'm putting the majority of the blame at Byron Scott's feet. I can tell that I wouldn't like playing for him. It looks to me like his methods could ruin young players. He's too static. Anyway, he's got a history of bad relationships with players. I guess Jason Kidd was on to something. Byron's only saving grace is that there are many worse coaches out there than him, so replacing him is a crapshoot. Unfortunately, I think we have to risk it. Find someone the players will like, respect, and who can foster young talent. I think Byron's primary coaching tool is fear, and that aint good.
Anyway, I know we're in a financial jam, but something better happen. If this team does not drastically improve, we'll lose CP. We lose CP, the team gets no support and with no support, they'll be gone. 15k in attendance last night on a Friday. I hate to say it, but I think it's the truth. I am hopeful however. I believe Shinn is dedicated to making the team better, so when we free up our millions in a couple of years, I think we'll be in good shape. For now, however, we're just stuck.

Apologize to Bill Simmons? No way. He said CP and Byron don't get along. We know they do. CP loves the guy. But Chris Paul is not the problem. The problem is what is Byron doing with all the OTHER guys on the team who aren't Chris Pauls? If the answer is "alienating them and not managing their minutes in a way that takes advantage of players' strengths," well....

One more addition. This is B. Scott to the media about Thornton:
"I truly believe this kid is going to be pretty good. Offensively, and with his quickness. . . . his only negative is his size (6 feet 4). Marcus, offensively, is more talented than any two guard we have. Like anybody else, I wish he was 6-5, 6-6. But he's not."
'Cause Byron wasn't a 6-3 shooting guard on a championship team or anything. 'Cause he didn't give most of the SG minutes last night to a guy who's 6-2. What does he gain saying stuff like this about the rookies to the media? Like how he said in the paper "Darren Collison didn't come to summer league with the entire playbook memorized like Chris Paul," or last year how he said Julian Wright was out of shape and didn't know what he was doing. James Posey is out of shape and some vets don't know what they're doing, and we don't hear this type of crap about them. Is this his way of challenging young players? It just seems unfair compared to the way he treats the veterans.

I don't know if Bosh ever had a game like that in his doggone career. LOL! Which makes fans want to throw away West even moreso. I'm not in that number though. To h*ll with Bill Simmons. I just read quotes in an article just yesterday (the article about Scott contemplating lineup changes against Toronto) and CP3 and West sure didn't sound like they've given up on their coach. Unless they are flat out lying to the media in their faces (which I wouldn't blame them for simply because I really dislike the media). And I watched them on tv against Dallas the other night and in the huddle they were very tuned in to what Scott was saying. And I'm so sick of hearing about how we'll lose CP. I love CP just as much as the next guy but if he goes, well then d*mit he goes. All I know is, I know people are riding high on the Saints right now and I'm very happy for them as well but I'm not turning my back on the Hornets. I was here for 18-64 and I'm here now.

tick tock -- totally agree. Byron is contradicting himself completely! We play B Brown as a 2 guard for a good portion of the game. Exactly how much would the team actually lose when playing a 6'4 guard as opposed to a 6'5/6'6 SG??
Byron has constantly been stressing defense so far this year. Im pretty certain that Thornton is a better defender than Bobby Brown. He is just as explosive as well. I feel like Byron just continually manages to come up with excuses about not playing the rookies. Brown has an extra year of experience than Collison and Thornton, so therefore he soaks up ALL the minutes? And don't get me wrong, I do like what B Brown has given the Hornets off the bench. He's certainly an upgrade and a half over Antonio Daniels (for what this team needs).
When the Raps were draining 3s in the 3rd quarter, I was nearly throwing a fit that Byron simply wouldn't take a risk by throwing the rookies in and seeing if MAYBE they could get something going, because clearly the other players on the floor had nothing going for themselves. Instead, they weren't put in until the final minutes, when all was lost. I initially refuted all the talk about Scott's contract year and possibly getting fired, but if he keeps this up, I don't see him making it to the end of this season.

btw, i'm still very optimistic about the Hornets this year. I think it'll take another month or so to get things clicking, but this team WILL be clicking before too long.
I also saw Emeka Okafor walk by the Howlin' Wolf last night!!! By the time I came outside tho, I only saw him from behind, walking with a friend of his. But it was definitely him! very exciting

It is true that the other division rivals aren't doing particularly well right now either. Especially the Spurs which I am rather surprised at. I think they are like us at being winless on the road. They've dropped 2 in a row now. And they just lost Tony Parker for about a week.

So now Brown starts against Kobe? Well I'm sure that will work out well for us.
I'm thinking this season was over before it began. Shinn didn't extend Scott and those rumors of Scott to replace Phil Jackson have been going on, so at this point it almost seems like Scott is just going to do it his way until he gets sent back to his roots.
Shinn is sick now so I doubt he's going to be as hands on as intended about making sure we develop the young talent.
So we're left with Brown against Kobe with the only other potential rotation being Peterson/Kobe. We're screwed.
How can we compete against the deep West teams when we can't even put in a dependable starting 5? We've got 3 good starters leaving us in bad shape out the gate, and a suspect bench.
CP3 looks like Superman on a nightly basis, but he can only carry so much weight.

Oh and for the record, Marcus Thornton is averaging 36 points and 18 rebounds per 36 minutes on 50% shooting. Hahahaha.
Did anyone else notice that our best defensive possesion of the ENTIRE game came when Marcus Thornton and Collison were in the lineup?
Anyway, I still say its too early to freak out, although these losses have come in very disheartening fashion. 15-20 games in we'll have a much better sense of what level this team can actually compete at.

I think Scott is a good coach, but fails to make the right decisions right now. And what kind of plays is the team actually running??? It's just Ball-to-Cp-and-see-what-happens all the time. The great teams have great players, too, but they have great plays in the first place to get them the W's. The movement on offense is non-existent and with Posey, Peterson and Peja it's just like a prayer to ask for more energy on the court. Keeping their extremities all together is all you can ask from these guys, they are way too slow. And Devin Brown won't be the remedy either!

Our sg position sucks. As much as I'd like to see Thornton I don't think he should be in the starting lineup against Kobe Bryant so what's the other choice? A rookie, Mo, or Devin? Bobby shouldn't start either. Devin may be a better defender out of the players listed. Won't make much difference against Kobe but I think he'd be the better defender of the 2 guards we have to select from.

For this matchup, I'd start Julian at the 2, Peja at the 3. With Bbrown, Mo, Posey, Songalia, Armstrong as your back up rotation, but expect to play the starters heavy minutes, and substitute piece by piece rather than a full swap.
Then, against the Clippers, start Lil' Buckets at the 2. Ju-Ju back at the 3.

I agree Queenbee you can't make a rookie's first game against Kobe, but they do need to be getting regular minutes. Otherwise they'll just pull a Brandon Bass once they go to another team and start getting playing time.
And I feel that this team has quit on Byron Scott. That was apparent to me when Denver put that beating on them at home in the playoffs, and I would have tried to do something about it then, instead of letting it fester and doing the inevitable mid season coach change and killing playoff chances, but that's just me.

@QueenBee- Really? Sick of hearing bout whether or not CP3 goes? You do realize that our basketball team in this city will more than likely leave with him? That any chance of ever winning a championship DEFINATELY leaves with him? I can say both of those with a ton of confidence.
