Tonight, the Hornets simply out-hustled the Phoenix Suns and evened Jeff Bower's head coaching record at 2-2. The Hornets owned a +18 edge on the glass and had an astonishing 25 offensive rebounds - one more than the total number of defensive rebounds the Suns had. The Hornets now stand at 5-8, hardly an impressive record, but there was one very important difference between this game and the games we saw under Byron Scott: The guys didn't quit.
The Suns were down three at the half after battling back from being down big in the first quarter. They then came out and ripped off a 16-5 run to open the second half, and it looked like the Hornets were letting it slide out of control. Instead, the Hornets simply buckled down, attacked the screen and roll, got back in transition, and fought back. By the end of the third, the Hornets had reclaimed their lead and didn't back down the rest of the way. Good stuff.
Observations:
- Just a few hours after I make a joke about worrying about Peja taking open threes, he goes out and has his best game of the last two seasons. 25 points and 13 rebounds. 7-11 from three. He was even in amongst the trees digging out offensive rebounds, and he came away with 5. Do you know the last time Peja had 5 offensive rebounds? January 6, 2006. When he still played for Sacramento. The team was running plays for him all night - and not just the simple "catch and shoot" plays off screens like Byron used to run. They were sending him across the paint regularly(probably a reason for the rebounds), which kept the Suns scrambling, and West and Okafor were setting staggered screens in the paint for him to weave through probably every fourth possession. In fact, I noticed that by the end of the game, Peja looked a little ragged. He probably hadn't worked that hard in game in a long time. But it worked. And that three he hit with 2 minutes to go was icing on the cake for a turn-back-the-clock game for him.
- Darren Collison was ice cold in every sense of the phrase. For the first three quarters, he was ice cold and unable to buy a shot. They weren't bad shots, they were just falling short. In the fourth quarter, he was ice cold as he drilled two huge shots - first a pull-up three(his first of the season) and then a beautiful drive into the paint and fake pass to Okafor that allowed him to finish a nifty layup at the rim. It took some real balls to take those shots as he was 2-13 up to that point, but he was up for it. He piled two free throws on top of that to help seal the game, meaning he is now shooting 95% from the free throw stripe. 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal and only one turnover in 32 minutes.
- At some point, I'm going to have to stop bashing Brown if he keeps playing like this. He scored 19 tonight on 17 shots, and he had his inevitable ugly-looking drives, but he stretched the floor, knocked down his open threes, battled on the boards, and played very solid defense on Jason Richardson, who has no jets to use to burn him. Brown also added 5 assists, and it was he and Marcus Thornton's aggression in the third that turned the game around. Brown also had the niftiest pass of the game - a no-look wrap-around pass as he dribbled away from the basket to Darius Songaila for an easy basket. Nice. Oh - that was all about Devin Brown, not Bobby, who was terrible.
- Bobby Brown got the Pargo treatment: He entered the game, took his bad shots, Bower realized he wasn't hitting them, and nailed him to the bench. That's the proper way to handle him.
- Thornton was a great energizer off the bench. Once again, he put up 19 points on 12 shots in only 20 minutes. He leads the team in usage rate, and I doubt that'll change anytime soon . . . and I'm fine with it. He clearly fears no one, driving into a flagrant foul by Amare Stoudemire, and he shows extremely high basketball IQ in the way he moves through screens and continuously fools his defenders into giving him an open back-cut to the rim. He tweaked his ankle in the third when he stepped on a fan's foot, but his ankle was taped and he was ready to go in the fourth, even if Bower elected not to use him.
- With West struggling with foul trouble, the Hornets opted to go small rather than use Marks who is struggling with an injury of his own. They instead moved Songaila to center and Posey to Power Forward. They held their own during that time - though that may be more a testament to Amare Stoudemire's allergy for rebounds than any superior skill on the boards by those two.
- Every time the camera went to the Hornets bench, Chris Paul was talking, talking, talking. To teammates, coaches, the refs, everyone. And he was as excited as anyone to see Collison hit those two huge shots. If he wasn't a superstar, he'd be the best towel-waving teammate in the league.
- Anyone else notice the Hornets opened the game daring Channing Frye to shoot? Ballsy move. The guy had been knocking them down so far this season. Later, in the second half, the Hornets suddenly started blitzing him, and on five separate possessions he either hesitated before firing and didn't get the shot off in rhythm, or ended up passing it off to Steve Nash - essentially forcing a reset of their offense.
- Okafor was a fiend in the first quarter as he collected offensive rebounds and putbacks. The Suns were awful at boxing him out, as he was usually jumping for the ball without someone even pushing at him. I laughed when he got his vicious putback slam in the third, because his cover Channing Frye had made a nonsensical decision. When Thornton shot, Frye immediately disengaged with Okafor and instead boxed out Darius Songaila. Me? I'm thinking Okafor would be the guy I'd try to box out. Okafor finished with 13 and 10 and some nice defense.
- There will be some who trash David West after this game because of his weak rebound numbers and missed shots. They'd be justified.
- Okay, I can't leave it there. While West struggled with his shot, I need to point out that the Suns were collapsing on him every time he got near the paint. Double teams were coming constantly. Despite his bad shooting, the focus he demanded from the Suns made a big difference. He got 5 assists himself(for the second game) and he generated multiple open shots as the ball swung around the perimeter after they collapsed on him in the post. Now, if only he'd rotate and box out.
- Posey was terrible in his first stint as he left Jared Dudley open for wide open three pointers and committed stupid fouls. In his second stint - maybe because he realized the Hornets could actually win - he was working hard, fighting for rebounds, and hit an important three pointer. Personally, I preferred it when Songaila was out there. He worked hard every minute of the game. Not just at the end.
That's it. The Hornets get another huge test on Saturday as the Hawks come visiting. Maybe the Hornets can pull off another surprise revenge game. Wouldn't that be sumthin'.

First?! Wow. Tough game to interpret. CP3 sat out with an injury and West (although he was swarmed) played poor offensive basketball; given those two facts, it's hard to believe we topped the team with the best record in the west. Indeed, all indications pointed towards a lopsided loss.
However, the boys really seemed to rally around Coach Bower (that feels refreshing to type). I don't want to jinx anything but this win should be a clear indication that Marcus Thornton deserves the starting 2 spot. Simply put, he was active on both ends of the court and shot really well -- that's enough to justify a start, right?
Collison shot poorly but showed his fearlessness by converting a couple of clutch shots in the fourth. Regardless, I don't think we can read too deeply into that. He's clearly the 2nd PG option.
Devin Brown had himself a good game, again. No, the kid is not Mr. Consistency. But we've proven, beyond any reasonable doubt, that we're not a consistent team. Now that we have a competent coach who can tell when/if one of our shooters is having an on night vs. an off night, we should be content to have players on our roster who provide the potential for explosive performances like DB does (yes, I'm serious).
Peja was on, too. He isn't always on. His game isn't that different from Devin's... seriously.
Either way, this was a huge win. A bellwether. I'm super happy, as should you be.

Man, I enjoyed the hell out of this game. Okafor was a beast in the first half. The Suns had no answer. We battled throughout the game and came out with a much-needed win. Thornton looked great off the bench, and I hope his ankle tweak isn't an issue. West was getting doubled hard and I saw a couple of nice passes out of it, but a tough game for him. We can expect more of that as long as CP is out. Peja was unbelievable tonight. If we get half of that production from him all year I'll be thrilled. I think it's time I stop bashing D. Brown. He plays as hard as the rookies do and made some huge plays tonight. Though he made some bone head decisions, he was a definitely a big part of this win. I do feel like he got some calls tonight that he is not normally privy to, but that's part of the game. Great effort, saw improvement on both sides of the ball. Great win.
On a sad note, I went to Lager's in Metairie to watch the first half and had to ask them to put the game on one TV for us. The Panthers-Dolphins game was on damn near every screen (they have 8-10), along with ESPN news on one and a college bball game on the other. We got there well into the first quarter too. Sad. However after that, I went uptown to The Boot for a charity concert and they had the game on almost almost all 6 screens. Yay Boot, boo Lager's.

First off, shout out to the effort from the crowd and the Hornets tonight. You could tell that almost every single one of those people wanted to be there and they showed it. It was a loud 12k tonight (I'm just estimating). The Hornets came out firing and their intensity and hard work fueled the crowd the rest of the way.
One game doesn't make a season but HECK YEA after this one. I was enjoying this game more than I have in quite a long time ('07 playoffs). Beginning to end, this was a complete package. An undermanned Hornets team takes down the best team in the west. They had a counterpunch to every jab the Suns threw and didn't let the game get away from them at any point.
Is it overreacting to get pumped up about being 5-8? Yes. But this is a team to be proud of. Most look at the roster and go down 1-10 and give an edge of 9.5/10 to the Suns (I'd give Frye a tie with Okafor but only because he's shooting lights out to start the season). So saying that, we came out with a win tonight without needing all of our starters to play well. Board work, hustle on offense, and unselfish team play won the day.
Devin Brown - Everyone doubted you, and you manage to step up and earn the playing time no one else seemed to want. Yes, I know everyone is skeptical he can keep it up. But for now, give the guy his credit and his glory. He ran the offense as a pass first point guard for a time, a spot up shooting guard at another, and stepped up when the Hornets needed some big buckets. Tonight, Devin, you are the man.
Let's get 'em Saturday! Top team from each conference is in town within 3 days. Time to show everyone we aren't going down without a fight.
Beelieve baby!

WOW. Some one states a competent coach in previous quotes, at least 2 times!!
GM Bower I assume no HC coach he is!! Win a game w/O Cp3 after limited practice time but we need to salery dump this team and rebuild!!
I must say after beating a 10and 2 team let's trade them all because BS is gone and CP is leaving and there is No fan support!!! Boy where is Good Fella!! Tank this season we just have no chance!!!
Oh yea we only lost by 20 one week ago!!

Guys I am holding my reserve until we see how they play on Saturday, but if we can pull a win it will take all I can not to start gushing. I am seeing flashes of brilliance, but I just don't feel like there is enough data yet to know if we have something to make us feel like we did about the seasons prospects before the season took the turn for the worse. I think if we can just hold our own and not get blown out by the Hawks, we have a shot at some great stuff this year.
With that said, I almost think we need to see where the record stands on December 1. If we can do 4-2 from the Clippers this Tuesday until the end of the month we should all be confident in that 48ish win mark for the year with a decent chance to advance. I am just holding my breath as I think these last two games and the next should be easy games for the guys to get hyped about and play hard. New coach, new system, something to believe in with the hope that comes with change, good opponents, etc... But if they can keep it going without CP3 and not get lazy when it's not a big opponent and the team is getting a bit cocky from the rare taste of recent success, I will think we are a bit out of the woods.
Also, is it just me or does it feel like we are starting to see the rotation materialize. It just feels like there is not so much guessing about who should be out there, and the trial and error feel we have had for two years now is fading.
I know it's only two games with a new direction, but things just feel different. I mean, REBOUNDS! When have we killed two teams in rebounding in a row. Again, I will withhold my giddiness until I see them do it against the Hawks as that would be two top 10 rebounding teams in a row, but still REBOUNDING!?!
I also think I like this rotation with Thornton coming in off the bench, as long as Devin can keep his production at a decent level. I like the scoring and energy we get from him coming off the bench. Even though he may be a better producer at the 2 than Devin, I think his value as a way to keep the machine running when the starters start to rotate out may be his real value. I like how he basically plays a whole quarter splitting the first and second, so he should get good minutes if they extrapolate that idea to the second half. I really do like the way they push Devin to point and him to 2 until Bobby comes in for point. I think it works well with CP3 out. It is going to be curious how things play out with that rotation once the man is back, but I think we have something that works in the interim. Not once did I feel like things were languishing out there while we waiting for a personnel change.
Just a good couple of games.

Good result for sure, but it be one game, a vast improvement on the boards was key as was Peja winding back the clock. What it shows is the the young talent here is capable and results are not out of the question when everyone puts in an effort.
What remains to be seen though is if and when CP3 returns does everyone drop back into watching him do it all. Maybe this stretch with out him will force some cowboy up out of the vets, no question the rooks are full of fizz.
Lets hope this is not a one off or one in every 4 or 5 performance.
But if they can go along at .500 or so while Paul is out that has to be seen as almost best case scenario.
One thing I know from sports watching worldwide, no matter what sport or what country a fired coach always provides a spike in form, that generally doesn't last. The change at the top normally is seen as a chance for discarded players to get back in the rotation as well as underperforming team mates lifting to keep there job.
For now though the players have pulled there socks up and lets hope that while everyone is a state of redemption/paranoria a team is formed amidst the current turmoil.
I got my hopes that all will be good yet with alot of the season left to play.
One thing is gnawing away at me is why we havent seen West come out blazing perfect chance to be the BMoC , guess he aint found his shot this season, im sure he can expect increased attention without CP3 on court, but I think the season maybe on his form through this stretch, we cant get 20 out of peja or the rooks every night but west should be able to produce this he is an allstar!
Anyone no what Marks status is? is it injury that has him on the bench. I sure hope so cause he is missed on the court and that is something that the stats cant always show.

One swallow does not make a Spring - Aristotle
Success starts with individual competance and effort and build into a pattern, but in pro sports, that pattern isn't total domination. Very good team win 2 of 3 games. This translates into about 55 games in the NBA (11 in the NFL) in the regular season, ignoring variability in the quality of opponents.
This also translates into local criteria, such as dropping back to back games happening a out 4 times a season, and dropping 3 in a row once. We've basically already done that, but there are some extenuating circumstances.
At any rate, winning or losing Saturday isn't as important a predictor of future performance as individual competance and effort. A pattern will emerge from all this, but right now, and Saturday, their record could mean anything.
That all being said, doing it without CP3 drawing the best the bad guys' have to offer has to make one salivate when thinking about watching those games when he's back, I mean, collecting nominal data.

ryan- you hit it on the head. very encouraging performance, even if the hornets hadn't been able to pull it out. this is a game the hornets would have lost with byron. they would have quit when the suns made their push. also thornton and collison wouldn't have played :bangs head:
for as much as dwest struggled making shots, i thought he was still pretty active. he's always going to blow box outs, but he did rotate out on shooters and contest some shots tonight. he's looking refreshed right now. keep it up dwest!

Most fun I had watching a game in a long long time. The energy of the crowd was on a whole different level because the players were hustling out there. All those offensive rebounds really made me smile.
@ Jimbobaggins: Marks is suffering from some shoulder pain. He took a shot before the game and said he was ready to play, but Bower opted not to use him.

I think the most important aspect of this game is that we fought back, continued to hustle, and retook the game from the western conference leaders after an almost near collapse in the beginning of the second half. That resiliency is what makes a team a champion and a contender and what we have been missing for a while. The win only makes it more contagious for our players in the future. Great job Hornets!
I know Peja has been off for a season and 8 or 9 games now, but he has been playing better lately. I am not going to look at all of the box scores from the past games, but if I remember correctly his game has been improving. He's been moving more, hitting more shots, and just a more active player. We are really a better team when he is on.
I think Posey should have been benched right after he made those 2 or 3 turnovers within seconds of each other in the second quarter. He looked like he was drunk or just didn't care. I am not against Posey. I still believe he will improve as his conditioning improves, but I do think he needs to be treated like any other player on the team (aka B Brown getting benched). When any player performs as lethargically as he did they should be benched and other players should be given the chance. I am not advocating a BS benching that last for a month or so, just for that moment or game. Everyone has a bad night and it should be addressed.
Finally, the rookies are looking awesome, and they are improving every night. Hell yeah!!! I am not sure about starting Lil Buckets though because I think his bench energy is greatly needed right now. That is unless Devin can bring that same energy off of the bench. What do you guys think?
See you all Saturday night!

Should Thornton be starting, or simply playing huge 6th man minutes? He always comes up with great energy off the bench, so maybe the Hornets keep Thornton on the bench and use him like the Mavericks use Jason Terry or the Nuggets use J. R. Smith.

I am shocked that Peja's back did not fall off by the end of the game. Anyone want to take bets on when he hits the IR? Good game by him....but i wonder how long that can last. That was the reason Byron put him off the bench.(or unless ownership made him start juju) I just hope that West can shoulder some of the load on a more consistent basis....I just don't understand what has happened to him.

I'm with the last two posters. I've been leading the Start Thornton bandwagon for weeks now. But... I'm gonna go with huge 6th man minutes. He's such a spark out there, no matter what other players he's surrounded with. I'm not as confident about Devin Brown doing that. He couldn't last year, remember.

Personally, I believe it's too early in Thornton's NBA career to give him a defined role on the squad. Be patient with the kid, let him get used to the NBA game, then the coaching staff will find a role that best suits his skill set. Perhaps more important that the win is what this kind of floor time does for Thornton's and Collison's confidence. I had to watch the replay of the game on NBA TV in the wee hours of the morning because I was outta town during the game, but it never once seemed like those kids were playing outside of themselves. No matter what was happening out there, momentum swings, scoring droughts, etc.... those two just played their game. It was refreshing to see. Also, Big props to Songaila. He's playing good basketball right now. He's kind of like the new Ryan Bowen, only better. I'm lovin' the hustle out there. Keep it up Darius.

I will also join in with the idea that Thornton should get 6th man minutes. I had been dreaming over the past couple of games, of a starting lineup that would consist of Paul/Thornton/Peja/West/Okafor, when CP3 came back, but with the way Devin's been playing (WHAT??) and the energy Lil Buckets brings, I think he's much better suited coming off the bench.
I think the most impressive thing over the past couple of games has been the energy. Playing at a higher pace provides for more shots, and therefore, more points. Now I know the Suns aren't the D'antoni Suns of old, but their pacing is still pretty high, and we put up almost 10 more shots than them last night. That's nothing to turn your nose up at. Along with the energy on the boards on both sides of the court, this is something that I could definitely get used to.
If everyone could be healthy at the same time, we can cause serious problems for everyone in the league.

"I told someone that, to me, this is a real trap game because everybody looks at it and goes, 'Oh, gee, they've lost Chris Paul. Hilton Armstrong is not playing."
That's right, they didn't think we could do it without Hilton. How could they possibly take us seriously without Hilton?

I always sated, that Peja needs posessions in motion! I hope they go on develloping more useful plays. With screens, movement and stuff. For what did they pay Byron Scott? For his pride? By the way. Who is this guy, wearing no 23??? And what happened to Devin Brown??? No 23 is a solid guard!

By the by, Peja being active and taking the ball to the rim and getting rebounds and stuff like that... it's not unprecedented. Around January of 2009, David West went out with an injury for a few games and Peja stepped up his game and started playing more like a power forward, and we were all heaping praise on him. He then wore out his back and missed something like 15 games.

FOR ALL THE BLOGGERS
This is my first season as a 24/7 blogger, and it has become my main and sometimes only source for Hornets news. I have become so impressed with 24/7 that my Times Picayune Sports page has been collecting dust, and it hasn't seen the pleasant shade of the courtyard in very long time
I just wanted to mention that I checked out some other blog sites very recently, and I wanted to thank Ryan and Niall for everything they do here (and anyone else who takes part in the production of 24/7). Although I only visited 4 or 5 other sites Hornets 24/7 blew them all out of the water. The interface, appearance, ease of use, depth of the blogs, and overall format seemed, for me, to be the best BY FAR! Thanks for you dedication to the team, and I'm glad to have a such an engaging source as part of my franchise.
@LsuHornet- It blows my mind that the Hornets are still invisible to so many people in the city. I could understand if the Saints were playing, but Miami and Carolina...come on...who cares?

Ya know I don't know if anyone else felt the same way but last night when Thorton was hobbling around on that ankle I was as worried as I was when Chirs Paul went down with an injury. I was legitamately worried. You don't what you got til it's gone I guess! haha

That game was a lot of fun! The haters had me down, almost giving up on this season, but the Hornets came through! I've been a D.Brown hater a long time, so I gotta give him major props! Okafor gave them a great start, and Peja was insane, last night the Peja-heads running and bobbing were truly justified. If I was Bower I'd put JuJu in instead of Posey. Neither have given much on the offensive side, but JuJu brings more energy, is more athletic, and will definitely block more shots and get more steals than Posey. Collison did a great job, to expect anything more from him would be unfair.
I didn't have time to read all the replies, sorry if that's glaringly obvious... Someone might have mentioned it, but I was pretty surprised to see that the Hornets have a winning record when playing without CP3?! (16-15) Is that correct?

Wow. I missed much of the 3rd quarter watching my Buckeyes battle UNC. I love when the Hornets are on because it's a lot better than watching on the laptop here in Ohio. From the first half and the big share of the 4th, I'm in pure excitement. I agree with most people that Thorton needs to keep coming off the bench. He provides a spark that keeps up the scoring when some starters sit. Collison played this one like a veteran. Many rookies falter when they struggle like he did. What's this guy do? He hits two clutch shots late and he had no doubt he could make the play.
Hats off to Devin Brown. I think every Hornet fan had some type of frustration to D. Brown. But this guy is stepping up right now. He's still making a few bonehead plays but he's getting looks. It seems he gets many good looks from deep, the opponent seems to not see him as a threat and he's taking advantage of the looks.
I'm starting to think the Daniels trade was a major steal. I felt it had that potential when the deal was made. Darius has such great energy and a good IQ. He doesn't do a ton on the stat sheet but he plays solid. And although Bobby Brown has had his issues I think he's improved from early on. And I feel Emeka is looking solid as well. It shows a team could some solid things without making giant moves.
Going forward, a loss Saturday isn't a killer as some may feel or a revealer of weakness. However, a win and I am going to be getting really excited.
Anyone else notice the joy for Chris Paul last night too? Many forums I seen tried to say he was unhappy. I never bought it and last night further showed it. Loved his energy after Collison hit that three ball. Also, loved seeing him "coach" Collison during the timeouts.
Feeling really good here. Let's hope for back to back shockers!
