A complicated game tonight, with lots of shades of gray. Practically every Hornet had multiple highs and lows against the Bucks, but came good down the stretch to get the win in overtime, 102-99 ( box | recap ).
Notes...
Winning Ugly
After the game, Jeff Bower talked about how good teams can still win even when they shoot poorly and turn the ball over aplenty. The Hornets certainly did that tonight. They shot just 21.7 percent from the field in the first half, 36.6 percent for the game and turned the ball over 23 times. Balancing that out was a strong effort on the glass (61-49 Hornets advantage), and a solid night at the free throw line (28-of-31).
Darren Collison vs. Brandon Jennings
There wasn't much to the rookie point guard match-up in the first half, with Jennings in foul trouble and Collison struggling with three turnovers. But the battle got heated down the stretch. Jennings looked to be on a mission to close it out when he scored or assisted on 8 of the final 10 Bucks points in regulation. Collison was right there to match him though, hitting a late layup and nailing the three to force overtime.
In OT, it was Collison coming out on top. His customary full-court pressure resulted in some free throws after pouncing on a Jennings fumble in the backcourt, and then DC would cross up his counterpart in the final seconds to get down the lane and earn another trip to the line. Great experience for Collison to be out there making big plays on offense and holding his own against Jennings defensively. Final numbers:
Collison: 18 points, 5-12 FGs, 8 assists, 7 boards, 2 steals, 5 turnovers.
Jennings: 14 points, 4-15 FGs, 8 assists, 7 boards, 4 steals, 5 turnovers.
I was impressed with Jennings' game overall, even though he had a rough shooting night. I expected him to be more of a chucker, but he rarely forced a shot and didn't dominate the ball.
Forcing Overtime
The Hornets had the ball, down three with 7.5 seconds left. Out of the timeout, I expected to see Posey, Peja and Thornton coming onto the floor, giving the Hornets plenty of guys who can hit the three. Instead, Bower/Floyd opted to roll with the following unit: Collison, Peja, Songaila, West and Okafor. Note that Peja is the only real three-point threat in that group. When the whistle blew, Peja come off a double screen and faded to the far corner (and that would have been a tough catch and shoot if the ball had been thrown to him). Collison took the inbound, came off a high pick and hit the pull-up, with Luke Ridnour getting a decent challenge on the shot.
Bower admitted after the game that Collison shooting a three off the pick was one of the "back-end" options on that play. I can't imagine what the other options were, besides trying to run Peja off another screen or two.
I'm just glad Collison hit that shot and we don't have to worry too much about the what-if's.
David West
Like most of his teammates, it took West a while to get going. Midway through the third quarter he was shooting just 1-of-9 from the field, which included a couple of point blank misses. But he more than made amends by shooting 8-of-10 the rest of the way, finishing with a season-high 27 points to go with 10 rebounds and 5 assists.
West often gets accused of being a little lazy out there on the floor, but that certainly wasn't the case tonight. He battled hard for post position all game, and it was nice to see his teammates keep feeding him in there. Defensively, the Hornets did a nice job on hedging hard on Jennings when he came off a pick and not letting him roam down the lane. West was often the help defender in those situations, most notably the last play of regulation when the Bucks failed to even get a shot off.
Marcus Thornton
Marcus Thornton brought his usual energy and aggressiveness, but he just didn't have it working tonight. He shot 1-of-5 for four points and also committed four turnovers. He ended up playing just 20 minutes, mostly due to foul trouble.
James Posey
Great hustle from Posey tonight. He played some nice D considering he was usually matched up with a faster opponent due to the small lineups the Bucks frequently ran with. He was credited with just one steal, but I recall him getting a hand on the ball several times. He also scored 9 points, grabbed four boards and delivered a nice playoff foul on Ridnour right before halftime.
Emeka Okafor
A great presence on defense tonight, finishing with 8 points, 13 boards, 3 blocks and 2 steals in just 26 minutes. Offensively, the Hornets rarely look to him in the low post, meaning most of his shots come from offensive rebounds. He still looks like he's going through some struggles getting familiar with his teammates and vice versa.
Might be worth keeping an eye on his minutes going forward, as he played just 14 minutes Sunday in Miami and didn't play at all in overtime tonight.
Ike Diogu injury update
I spoke with Diogu before the game, asking about the rumors that he might be out for the season. Not the answer I wanted to hear: "That's a possibility." He said he's doing what the doctors are telling him, taking it a couple of weeks at a time. He's been going to every practice, walking through the offense, working on his core. After speaking with him though, I really don't get impression that he'll be back any time soon. I'm thinking January at the earliest.
Some quick bullets to finish it out:
- Luke Ridnour played a great game. He was aggressive, ran the offense nicely, and hit his open looks. He also played some great defense on Peja and Thornton.
- The Hornets were constantly looking to free Peja on offense but he didn't end up with many open looks. He finished with just 10 points on 3-of-16 shooting.
- David West's combined first half shooting the last four games: 6-30.
- Morris Peterson sighting. He played a couple of minutes in the first quarter and a couple more in the second. He ended up forcing a couple of shots (one late in the shot clock) and contributed nothing else.
- The Hornets biggest lead of the game was 3 points.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Hornets back in action Sunday in Sacramento.
UPDATES: Game highlights...
Jeff Bower's comments post game...
An excerpt from Mr. Kennedy's post-game Journal report:
Bench was very productive for MIL: Ridnour had 23 points and 10 assists, Hakim Warrick had 22 points and 10 boards, and Michael Redd, in his second game back off the bench coming back from a knee injury, had 11 points.

I believe you have Collison and Jennings' stats backwards.

David West
Kudos all around. He like everyone was having trouble in the first half, but man you saw what he is capable of when he wants to play tonight. In post game interviews I heard Bower talking to Gerry V. about the Hornets deciding to play tough ball inside down the stretch to try and spark the offense by forcing fouls. The reveliation that Davids constant putting the ball on the court and driving the lane and not trying to get his jumper going was by design and not out of frustration makes his performance tonight all the more wonderful to me. He is a tough dude, but I feel like you rarely get to see it because we use his jumper so much. It was great to see him take that game plan on his sholders and make it work. And boy did it!
His defense tonight was money. I am always one of his biggest critics as far as his defense, but I have to give it up for the effort tonight. Not just the effort, but the execution as well. I was jaw on the floor, cheering David when he was the reason why we got that last stop in regulation. I don't think I have every praised him on a defensive play like I did tonight, and it was because that play was just the cherry on top of the great work all night. Again, Kudos David.
Team Effort
This really was a team win. Jerry V. said it best I think when he said, I am paraphrasing, "There was a string of hero plays tonight that saved the day." The defensive and offensive effort of D-West, the clutch shooting and defense of Collison, Darius' tip in in the last seconds, Devin getting that rebound when he was brought in as a defensive substitution... etc.
This is just the latest of a string of gutsy, gritty, team games that should make us all proud to call ourselves fans of this team. It is nice to see the Pride back in the Passion, Purpose, Pride!

Awesome game to attend. I was part of the group chanting DC2 near the end.
That's not what I was hoping to hear about Ike at all. I really thought he might be a shot in the arm going forward.
I was a little puzzled as well by Songaila being on the floor for the three point shot.
Anyone else think we might have had the best draft in the league?

This was the first game I was able to make it to, and I sure picked a good one. Of course it was Thornton's worst night, but I can live with that anytime we get the W. I came away really impressed with Ridnour, and not just because he was knocking down shots (even though it looked like he couldn't miss). His defense was spectacular. When Thornton was in the game Ridnour never strayed further than a couple of feet. He never left to help, and it resulted in Thornton's worst night since receiving regular minutes. Of course Marcus' shot was off, but Ridnour deserves a lot of credit. They have a good 1-2 punch at the PG position.
I was equally impressed with Posey once he was assigned to guard Ridnour. I thought it was a peculiar assignment even though Ridnour had been on fire and abusing Thornton around screens, but it paid off. I could be wrong, but I don't think Ridnour made more than FG after Peja came in for Marcus at around the 4min mark in the 4th quarter, at which point Posey switched onto Ridnour.
West is getting the looks he always gets, he just not sticking them. I felt like he could have had 40pts in this one. I don't see this funk lasting much longer.
Collison is unbelievable. Ice-water in veins and potential to be an elite defender. As if we weren't spoiled at PG already....
Happy Thanksgiving everybody

@lilhoters52: Good catch, thanks. Just fixed that.
@Joe: Hornets having the best draft might prove to be true. It's really looking like they got steals in both rounds. Collison and Thornton are playing like they should have been drafted much higher.

Great game Hornets.
Collison has been doing an amazing job running the team and performing in the clutch. It almost makes you feel bad for Byron Scott for being so wrong...(almost)!
I agree with you guys...West will break out of this slump sooner than later, and it is obvious that Posey's shape is improving and he is becoming more of a force again.
I was not concerned during the game despite the horrible shooting because our defense was looking good. They were hustling, fighting, and staying in position. I love seeing that sense of urgency and drive to win again. I think it was more than pride Ronin. They are also playing with passion and a purpose as well.
QUESTION OF THE DAY
In the end of the game, especially overtime, Songalia was used in place of Omeka. Why? Is Songalia a better defensive player or was it to match a smaller lineup? It seems to me that Omeka has an edge with regards to offense, rebounding, and shot blocking, and he is also a bigger presence in the paint.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

This Ike news makes me sad, but you know what they say, "Next Man Up". Songaila has been doing Yeomen's work on the floor in Ike's absence. The team's rebounding turnaround is astonishing since the Byron Scott firing. Rebounding is all about effort and inensity, and the Hornets are bringing that night after night. Effort and intensity will get you through poor shooting nights like this one.
I have questions about Okafor's usage late in the game too. My only thinking is that Bower/Floyd didn't want him to get his hand on the ball and get fouled to go to the line, like the Bucks running a "hack-a-Okafor". Hate to say it, but he is a liability in that regard.

All i can say is what an effort from the boys tonight! They did all the little things they needed to do to pull out a gritty win- rebounding, hustling, making that extra pass..
They stayed in it despite a horrible shooting first half (4 for 34 at some point i think compared to the bucks solid 40% throughout the first half). The effort was there..just the shots weren't falling. I was glad we were only down 8 at the half. Our solid free throw shooting and ability to get to the line were key.
Great effort the second half by the entire team..Dwest hitting clutch shots, Posey's D on Ridnour, Collison WANTING that win more than Jennings. Shots were finally falling. And i like how they kept their composure in the 4th quarter despite calls going against them and both teams failing to capitalize to put the game away.
Overall, a great win against a team that will make some noise in the East. The Bucks are very active on defense, especially with their ability to clog passing lanes and have very active hands. And a deep bench..62 of 99 points came from the second unit.
This is my first game i've been able to attend in the post scott era and i came away impressed with the way this team is playing. It might not be pretty basketball, but you can't fault the guys for trying and playing hard. This is just the begining of bigger and better things to come.

Really wish I could have watched this game. All I could do was checkout the gamecast on ESPN. Big win, and it's good to see us win a game that we didn't have much business in winning. You have to get victories like that to be a playoff team. DC is showing he has no fear, ice in the veins for this kid and I love it. The more I watch the more I think not only the draft, but the whole offseason was a steal for us. Anyone agree?
Drafting Collison and Thorton.
Those two have been monster for us recently. It's great to see young talent emerging so quickly after being thrown to the wolves.
Trading Antonio Daniels for Bobby Brown and Darius Songaila.
Okay, Brown gave us some headaches early but seems to really be improving with his limited minutes. Songaila impresses me every night. Darius has such a high basketball IQ and gives solid effort every second he is on the floor. Daniels, while under Scott would have been heavy on PT, with Bower he pry wouldn't be called to do too much. For him, we get two guys off the bench that are not doing too shabby.
Trading Tyson Chandler for Emeka Okafor.
Although taking a long term contract was interesting I felt good about this trade at first and continue to feel good. Emeka looks lost at times but he will form in with this team as time progresses. All the while Chandler, according to a Bobcat fan on a forum on ESPN Chandler is averaging 5 and 5.
Just goes to show you don't have to make the big time deals to make an impact. This summer I think we can take large steps forward. While the wars will be crazy for the big name guys I see the Hornets getting some great league minimum and some good exception guys to fill out the roster. Feeling really good right now.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I watched the game again this morning and came away very impressed with Songaila's play. He was setting great picks, keeping the defense stretched, and he was far better defending the pick and roll than Okafor because he's got quick feet and can stay in front of much smaller players. Great call by the coaching staff to have Darius in there down the stretch.

Hey Everyone,
We found a kitten at the game last night and took it home. Now we need a hornets-related name for it. Not sure of the sex yet, so anything will work at this point. Feel free to weigh in. FWIW, I like "Mr. Collison," but I don't think that's going anywhere. "Juju" has also been floated. Thanks.

I don't know about JuJu unless you wish the cat to be a disappointment for a few years, but then again that may be a result of problems with the parenting methods so the jury is still out. j/k ;)
You could always go with the obvious of Hugo...

How about Vespa? It's the genus name for hornets. Nerdy I know, but it's a cool name. If you don't like that, Polistes is the genus name for paper wasps, which you could shorten to Poli.

My buddy just named his cat Nola yesterday.
@Niall- I feel like any time you get a productive player out of the second round it's a big win. Getting a real 6th man (if he is) would be steal of Manu proportions. I do see what Scott was saying about his defensive limitations, but I think his offensive abilities easilly outweight the negatives, especially considering we have so few real scorers.

Kitten update:
Took it to the vet today and found out: (1) it's a boy; (2) it doesn't have feline leukemia or HIV; and (3) it does have ear mites and ringworm. He should be fine in a few weeks. I'll keep y'all updated. Thanks for everyone's name suggestions. However, I got my way, and he'll be "Mr. Collison" from now on ("Ollie" for short).
