The Hornets got down early in this one, and kept making surges to try and break through but the Kings answered every surge with one of their own, and at the end executed while the Hornets took more and more risky shots and finished with a blow out. It would have been nice to get one more win with a showdown with the Lakers looming.
Observations from the loss:
- West mostly eschewed the mid-range jumper tonight, only letting fly from the baseline twice and one top of the key shot. Instead, he focused on man-handling Kenny Thomas and Jason Thompson en route to the basket. He had some great success at that. However, he was consistently wrestled out of position on the defensive glass in the second half by the massive Jon Brockman and Thompson, and he was unable to corral the boards as they bounced out to Kings perimeter players. Still, it was nice to see West working the interior like a champ. One thing to note: Okafor and West are starting to develop a pretty solid game in the paint where West works the interior, draws both bigs, and finds Okafor for an easy flush.
- Tyreke Evans couldn't handle Collison's defense to save his life. If Evans tried to drive, Collison bothered his dribble and made him pick up the ball. If Evans tried to post him, Collison managed to be so energetic that Evans had to fade out to catch the ball, putting him in position to once again be forced to face up and drive. When the Hornets erased the big halftime deficit it was because Evans consistently wasted 14 seconds of the shot clock being harassed by Collison.
- On the flip side, Collison couldn't score on Evans either. His pull up wasn't working, and his drives were consistently harassed by Evans length.
- Beno Udrih and Sergio Rodriguez crushed the Hornets. As Collison fought over picks trying to track them, the bigs - usually Posey or West - didn't hedge out far enough, and they'd simply pop a shot off - and they always seemed to hit. They changed the game when the got on the floor and took over ball-handling duties for the Kings.
- Rodriguez and Thompson ran the pick and roll very well. The Hornets didn't defend it so well.
- Thornton fell in love with the three ball early, and took some early in the shot-clock I wish he hadn't. His drives were also usually against Tyreke Evans, and like Darren Collison, he struggled getting them over the top of the big rookie. Not a good game for Thornton.
- Posey played 42 minutes, and was mostly invisible out there. Peja may run hot and cold shooting nowadays, but you know when he's playing because he actually works and runs to get open on offense. Posey shuffles. It makes a big difference. Peja would have helped a lot tonight. Hopefully all is well.
- Emeka Okafor was a monster out there. He played solid defense, worked the boards and finished strong.
- There was a Julian Wright sighting. It went as well as you'd expect.
Have a good night.

where was devin brown on defense???? at many times he would just look at them shoot the 3, nonchalantly just grazing, at least sometimes posey would run over there, he would just look and get back on O because nine times out of ten they would make the shot.

The guard play as a whole on defense was pretty sad, except for DC. He is such a steady guy. I am very happy that we have him.
Niall or Ryan, have you guys heard what happened with Peja's family that kept him out of the game? When they said, he was "at home" to deal with the personal family matter, did they mean NOLA or Serbia? Do we have a time line on his return?

Need boards , simple answer play Sean Marks he is warrior at both ends grabs a ton of offense rebounds for the minutes he gets, why is he getting no love? still got shoulder issues, got any insight niall? pretty sure given minutes he would score more than hilton or darius, he was pretty effective outside scorer in his day. But obviously isnt ask to do that in his current roll. Looking like getting production from the 3 spot is of biggest concern. Can the hornets go to 3 guards and run and gun when CP3 returns or is that to much work load on the rookies. there is a saying in cricket if your good enough your old enough, think they have shown this so far.

The D last night looked like the D earlier in the season... There was almost no effort at all by the guards besides Collison to at least get a hand up in the shooter's face.

@ TheRonin: I don't have any inside info on Peja, but from what I can piece together, he stayed in New Orleans because of the illness of a family member.
@ Jimbobaggins: I'm not sure what the latest is with Marks' injury. I'd be surprised if that shoulder was still bothering him though. It didn't sound like a real serious injury.

I second Gregzheng1 about the defensive issue. We seemed lethargic for large spans of the game. Our energy would surface, and then we didn't seem to understand what basketball was all about. The energy would surface, and then we looked slow and confused. It is most disappointing because they should have been rested and known their assignments even more than the previous weeks.
Bright spots- I love seeing Omeka getting more involved, and Darren C is an absolute rookie champ. We have found a great backup for CP3.
Was this the same Rodriguez who use to play for the Trailblazers? If I remember right he use to put it to us with them as well...if it is the same guy!

Sergio Rodriguez was the difference in this game. He owned the 2nd quarter, and the Hornets had no answer for him. He regularly destroyed the Hornets when he played for the Blazers too. One thing about this Kings team; if you don't bring it for 48 minutes, they will beat you.
I saw the Hornets settle into some bad habits on defense. WAAAAAAAAYYYY too many uncontested 3's in this game. We were doing well in that area for a while, but those bad habits of not closing on shooters bit them in the butt last night. It's not like its some big secret that the Kings love the 3-ball. They have 3 guys that shoot over 40% from there. Not the kinda squad you want to leave open behind the arc.
These road losses are started to wear on my patience.

I so didn't read these comments expecting to see people clamoring for Sean Marks, but... Cool.

Bottom Line: Don't let up those three uncontested threes in a row or whatever it was, letting the Kings go on huge runs, you don't lose the game. Ugh. Did not like to see the return of the listless defense.
Devin Brown. Why oh why was he getting point guard minutes? I know Chris Paul is out and Bobby isn't a great distributor either. But it was painful to see Brown/Thornton for so many minutes. Devin Brown, btw, was as usual an offensive foul/turnover machine, and didn't hit a single field goal till like the 4th quarter. He was grabbing boards, hitting 8/8 free throws if I remember right, and had ONE flurry of good play, but seriously, that does not excuse the 10 other stupid decisions he made.

It looked like Sacramento got most of those open threes off the pick and roll. The Hornets did a pretty bad job defending it, several times either helping too much or too little. West got burned twice by Rodriguez, thinking he had blocked his path to the basket and easing off, only to see Sergio continue in for the layup at the last second.

I agree with you Ticktock6- I understand that Bobby is a mess in many areas, but his ball handling is superb compared to Devin. I mean the guy is a point guard. Now that you have mentioned it I am wondering if many of our stagnant moments in the game last night correlate with the absence of Collison, or if there were other issues at play.
