The Hornets had an early game up in Toronto, and once again were unable to get it done on the road, falling to a fairly weak Raptor squad. The Hornets had several things go wrong for them tonight, but this was a very winnable game. .500 will have to wait.
Chris Paul
I'm a little confused by Jeff Bower's use of Chris Paul at times. Yes, I know he's a top 3 talent in the league, but the man is fighting an ankle injury, comes up gimpy in the second quarter, and they still played him 40 minutes. It was also obvious it was bothering Paul too. No explosions into the paint, several mid range jumpers rather than drives, and his defense was atrocious in the second half as any determined drive to the basket would lose him. It was an ugly game for him - 10 points on 13 shots, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, a steal and five turnovers. Basically, he played like Jason Kidd.
Collison proved earlier in the season he can run the team. If Paul's hurting, then play the rookie.
Shooting Woes
The Hornets lost by 6. The Raptors are a bad defensive team, and you have to take advantage of that. The Hornets did not. I counted three missed uncontested layups by David West, one by Okafor, and two by Peja. Uncontested. If that wasn't bad enough the Hornets missed numerous wide open three pointers. 3-21, with almost everyone contributing to the clankfest.
Only Okafor and Songaila looked in sync on offense tonight. West and Paul found Okafor repeatedly with excellent bounce passes through traffic for dunks, and Songaila shot like Songaila always does. He's got a smooth 12-footer.
Rookie Report
Thornton was aggressive both offensively and defensively. He did get trapped several times in bad situations, but he still looks good as a scoring option off the bench. Particularly if he starts sticking his threes again.
Collison looked pretty good in his limited time. He did get bullied a bit by stronger Raptor guards, but the tempo of the game increased greatly with him out there, and that did help the Hornets a little.
Other Observations:
- West struggled mightily with Bosh, but he was working like a dog trying to keep him out of the paint. I don't care if he ends up getting burned a bit, as long as he's leaving it all out there. I think the effort he was expending on the defensive end contributed to the misses of easy looks on the other end.
- Peja actually had a good game - if you take away the clangs of his open three point looks. Otherwise, he was cutting, scrapping and contributing. He did a good job on Turkoglu too.
- Posey was great on Bosh. He was easily the Hornets best defender as he got right up on Bosh and didn't buy any of his shot fakes. He also boxed him out like a champ.
Next game is Wednesday, against Golden State.

Tough one to swallow. 0-4 against the Knicks and Raps isn't very impressive.
Reports of Posey's demise were greatly exaggerated. Lately, he's been playing the same brand of basketball that got him his ridiculous contract. Good to see.
Is there a charges taken per 48min stat? I feel like Posey would have to be high on that list.
Let's get these 2 winnable games next and conquer this .500 monster.

I've been begging for 500 for three weeks now. I think the only way we can get there is to have 5 straight games at home.

Missed the game today, but checking the stats, I have to say that I am starting to get annoyed with Jeff Bower's rotations. Since returning from injury, Bower stubbornly has Paul averaging 39.8 minutes per game!!! Despite Paul's recent explosiveness in the past few games (excluding today), it is still fairly obvious that he is not 100%. And when Collison steps in for him, Bower makes a Byron-esque decision to yank DC out of the game after making a couple of non-awe-inspiring plays...
39.8 minutes a game for CP is NOT the way to put your team in a good position for the rest of the season. I'd rather lose a few more games than overplay CP and risk him suffering another injury. And yes, Songaila has been efficient for us, but no matter how well Okafor is playing, he NEVER sees minutes in the 4th quarter. In clutch situations, I'd rather have a good presence in the paint than have another shooter out on the floor. Lastly, call me crazy, but it would be nice to see JuJu get off the bench at least once a game. I think he can be a great energy player, if nothing else....

Thing about Collison is he was doing pretty good as a starter so why isn't he playing the same way off the bench? He's looking more and more like a rookie these last few games. I didn't actually SEE today's game however. Come off the bench and pretend you're starting kid. LOL!

As for JuJu, I think his athleticism may have been somewhat useful against the athelticism of DeRozan and Weems.

I don't get to watch many Hornets games from where I live (small town Canada), maybe 5 or 6 a year, so it was nice to see my favourite team play today. A few things I noticed from the game:
- Okafor was very active inside and it is nice to see him getting involved in the offense. He really needs to be playing at the end of the game however, that is just ridiculous.
- Chris Paul has been my favourite player since he was at Wake Forest, but he has started to get on my nerves with the amount of whining he does. Really needs to cut it back. I know he is competitive and that is why I like him, but being competitive doesn't mean complaining about calls all the time.
- It was great to see the Hornets battle back from 9 down to within 3 with one minute left in the game, but then some dumb shots at the end ruined the comeback (Posey from 5 feet behind the 3 point line anyone?)
All in all, this is a game that we should have won to a Raptors team that isn't that good.

Paul looked tired and hurt all game. I agree with you that it's time he sits for a few games.
Okafor looks better offensively every game

@Max- I was expecting to see JuJu a little more after he took part in that 2nd quarter comeback a few games ago, and he played really well. I was wrong. I understand he put himself on the bench, but I haven't given up on him just yet- although there is only so much more I can take.
I am really upset to hear about CP3 playing for 40 minutes with a hurt ankle. Is this a move of desperation from our manager?
What is Bower's coaching record?

Frustrating game. There are bright spots though. I'm glad Posey has been playing solid the last few games and I'm becoming a big fan of Songaila. I also don't like all the minutes Paul is getting off the injury. Worries me.
".500 will have to wait."
Tough to read that again. I keep waiting for the breakthrough stretch for this team. Hope it happens.

Frustrating loss. Just an update on Sean Marks from the TP, Bower has said that there is no timetable for his return.

Also forgot to add, Sean Marks has stated himself that he is day-to-day. New blog entry for those who are interested:

Bummer. No comments on my dig at Jason Kidd? I thought it was funny.
@MaxALM - I don't always agree with Bower's rotations, but then I think of Byron Scott's rotations and I'm good.
@LSUHornet17 - Posey is tied for fourth in the league for Charges Drawn per 40 minutes. He draws 1.09 charges per 40. Nick Collison is 1st in the league with 1.52 charges per 40.

Ryan... the Kidd joke was great.
Anyway... funny thing I just realized about Toronto's defense. It's not just bad, its historically awful. If the season ended today, Toronto's D would go down as the WORST IN NBA HISTORY.

Wow, we suck on the road. Toronto wanted to give that game to us in the 4th quarter, and we wouldn't take it.
Its pretty clear that Posey's knee feels alot better from offseason surgery. He looks like he has his legs under him now. In the beginning of the season he just looked out of shape. He's not front-ironing all of his shots now, which is a positive sign.
You know Chris Paul is hurting when he's getting abused on the defensive end by Marcus Banks. I agree with MaxAlm on reducing Chris's workload. What you don't wanna see is something serious happen to him where he misses significant playing time.
I said I would be the happiest guy on the planet if the Hornets were .500 by New Years. It is still possible, and the schedule is favorable to make that happen. I don't think effort is the issue; its concentration, technique, and speed, especially when it comes to defending the paint. I'm still seeing guys in bad position after an opponent's missed shot, and either over-running the ball, or leaving a wide open lane for an offensive board and a 2nd chance opportunity for the other team. We've gotten slightly better on pick and roll, but we still have a long way to go in keeping our defensive integrity after a team makes 2 or 3 passes. That often results in the opposing team dictating what they will do offensively.

I'm starting to think our jerseys cursed. I understand they're an upgrade from the yellow ones, but ever since we switched we lose games to garbage teams.

The new unis have never clicked with me. I actually preferred the easter egg Teal and easter egg Yellow away unis to what we have now. They were unique and distinctive.
I think we look to "done" now - kind of like the Minnesota Vikings or something. Too much going on, too many cooks in the kitchen, too formulaic.
I do love our court and the FDB logo however.

disclaimer: I live overseas and haven't gotten to watch any games this season. I get all my info from two blogs and espn.
That said, I'm getting the feeling that the team needs a leader. An accomplished coach or player the league respects as a proven winner.
I know Paul (or West?) is the team leader, but, while talented and smart, neither has the championship experience that someone like Shaq has. I think someone like that could pull the talent on the roster together.
For a while, I guess Scott was a coach that could do it but he lost players after a point (and he isn't championship accomplished as a head coach).
I've always had mad respect for guys like Popovich but now I'm starting to appreciate why Phil Jackson is such a great coach ...
Long story short, in my opinion, either fill the team with guys approaching Paul's level of talent and basketball I.Q. at every position OR find an Obi Wan player and/or head coach (for Chris Paul and the rest of the talent on the team).
So tell me, am I off base?
(and if I'm not, who do you all think the team could get ... ? )
