For the second night in a row, the Hornets built a big lead in the third as one of their all-stars went off, and then promptly collapsed to start the fourth and gave it all away. Tonight, however, Okafor did not foul out, keeping his strong defensive presence in the paint for the final minutes, helping the Hornets to gut out a win - on their home court, of course.
Dwayne Wade scored an excellent 22 points on only 13 shots, but was also hounded into 6 turnovers and forced to give it up a lot early in the game as the Hornets continuously sent Paul to double him on the catch or Okafor hedged hard on the pick and roll to help contain him.
Okafor again, see?
Emeka Okafor
Fifteen points and fourteen rebounds for Emeka Okafor to go along with a single(???) block. He may have only been given one block by the scorekeepers, but he altered a good dozen shots in this game, and was hedging hard on every pick and roll, helping to keep the Heat out of the paint. He also defended Haslem’s game-tying attempt perfectly, setting West up for his jumper and four free throws to ice the game.
Okafor was also a part of two highlight reel dunks in the game – one a one-handed put back of his own, and the other as O’Neal dunked on his head. I’m glad he was in both of them, because that means A. He’s getting boards, which the Hornets need desperately, and B. He’s contesting shots, which the Hornets also need desperately. Oh - and his pick and roll connection with Paul has been improving by the week. That can't do anything but help Paul on his drives.
Devin Brown
If I had said at some point earlier this season that I’d be writing a recap highlight section about Devin Brown that didn’t contain the words, “Trade him now or I will throw myself off a bridge” then I’d have been lying to you. Brown was simply very good tonight. He provided shooting and drove to the basket under control and only forced two shots once there. He took advantage of Wade three times as the Heat star roamed for steals, getting easy points in the paint. His defense on Wade was also very good, shading him towards Okafor, and on the last three Heat possessions, putting enough pressure on Wade that he took three step back mid-range jumpers rather than going all the way to the rim.
If I didn’t know better, I would swear the Hornets traded Devin Brown for someone else.
Collison and Thornton Report
Collison had three unforced turnovers tonight on simple palming and double dribble violations. It did hurt a bit. All three occurred as the team set up for a half-court set. Despite those miscues, he still did a good job initiating the break and getting out and putting pressure on the Heat. His dunk on the break was gorgeous. I love seeing little guys get up and put it home, and he did it with style, throwing it down with both hands. It was necessary for him to do that too, because Wade was sizing him up to block his layup. Good recognition by Collison.
Marcus Thornton and Songaila were the go to guys in the half court sets for the second unit, but Thornton struggled to get free from his defender. When Thornton did get free enough to receive the ball, he typically hesitated a moment before attacking, allowing the defense to close off his options, and resulting in some forced jumpers. He’s got to be more immediately decisive like he was earlier in the season.
Other Observations:
- Chris Paul took over the third. His rip of Haslem and subsequent and-one on the break was vintage Paul. Following it with the crossover that sent Anthony to the ground and that little fading baseline jumper was just mean. All four of his steals tonight were also of the linebacker variety, where he simply slapped or tore the ball away from the ball-handler. I do have to say this, though - I'm not digging the Abe beard. Kinda scraggly.
- Peja Stojakovic had a bad game, as he once again was forced into some bad shots and missed a couple open looks. He also tweaked his back in the fourth – and there was no contact on the play, which is really bad. He was hobbling afterwards. I don’t expect this to be good news.
- Daequan Cook of the Heat helped the Hornets tremendously. He broke two plays to take bad jumpers, and jacked up a couple threes early in the shot clock late in the game. Not a high basketball IQ there.
- David West had another strong game tonight. The energy he showed in Houston was there again tonight. Yes, he had some slow rotations, but I’m not going to complain if he actually works on the boards and spends at least half his offensive possessions driving towards the basket, rather than falling away from it. His jumpers in the fourth were soft as hell. Fluffy-bunny soft.
- James Posey was bad. I may have mentioned this before. The Heat attacked him early in the fourth, forcing him to switch onto Dwayne Wade, and then abusing him.
- Songaila is money with his feet set – and he’s an amazing finisher close the basket. If only the Hornets had a rebounder to put next to him on the second unit, they’d have a solid set of subs.
Next game is Saturday against the Houston Rockets. Vengeance? Possibly, it’s on the Hornet’s home floor.
Have a good night.

Songaila never misses a shot. Like, ever. Am I wrong? No, I'm not.
Therefore: Shouldn't they give him more shots?
Or am I just an idiot?

We made the exact same observation about Thornton. At least twice he second guessed himself when he should have shot. But that second allowed the defender to close, and he ended up shooting anyway, only this time it was contested. One of his strengths is his quick release. He needs to use that.
This was ... a weirdly officiated game. Lots of calls in the first, quiet in the second and third, and then a million more calls in the fourth. Weird call one end, makeup on the other end. Ehhh... these games are just really annoying to watch, when the refs seem to suddenly decide people aren't paying enough attention to them, and then draw out the end of the game. Not a fan. But I was glad the Hornets didn't flip out and fold when some of the calls weren't going their way. They just went right back under the basket and battled. It sort of feels like this year they combust less. Does anyone else get that impression? (Now, of course, sometimes they're busy combusting in other ways than the refs...)

Ah ha. I see I'm not the only one who refuses to spell D-misspelled-on-his-birth-certificate-Wayne Wade's name right, haha. Wade travels alot, but honestly, he's so fast that I had to replay some of it multiple times to be certain.
The Anthony falling incident was just brutal seeing how CP didn't even do anything. The anticipation of our Point God just buckled that boy's knees.
Anyway, we'd better win on Saturday. All I'm saying.

Ticktock: Thornton decided to miss a pull-up jumper on a 2v1 fast break yesterday night. Haven't caught many games this season for various reasons, but does he ever really drive to the basket? I just hope he develops a slashing/passing game to complement his sniping because that would give us SO much more depth from the flexibility on offense.
And interesting enough regarding the officiating. Again I haven't seen many games, but I was going to comment on how I haven't blamed the officiating in awhile. Helps if I actually watch a game once in awhile, haha.

Thornton is hesitating. He needs to adjust his game for the minutes he's on the floor to be productive as possible. The Heat defenders seemed to make a pretty good point to stick with him though. If I remember correctly, the first Heat game was one of his 20 pointers. I'd like to see him get a little more playing time with CP that has been going to Collison. Collison's jumper has not looked good, even compared to Marcus' recent struggles. I think Thornton's cuts a quick trigger would result in some easy looks with Chris in the game as opposed to DC. Of course the same could be said of every Hornets player, as Chris Paul is apparently a pretty good point guard.

@Mark
He was slashing a lot when he first started getting playing time under Bower, but after he had some success scoring early on, he kind of camped out on the line more. He still makes some cuts without the ball, but he won't be constantly taking people off the dribble. My theory on his less frequent forays to the basket are that he was getting creamed a lot at the rim and not getting the call. It was getting pretty ridiculous when he was on his little hot streak. He would go up for the lay-up and get hammered, but not get a whistle. This certainly could have discouraged him from taking it all the way in, though I hope it just encourages him to become more adept at finishing over the trees down there. He could be a valuable weapon if he puts it all together.

@ Mark He drives to the basket with good speed, and earlier in the year scored on a lot of nice baseline cuts. He has some difficulty finishing with the size of the guys around him, though, and we have seen this less over the past few weeks. I wonder if it's something the coaches have told him not to focus on.

Thanks ticktock and LSU (leave it to an LSU alum to have an opinion on Buckets!). He needs to develop a killer instinct and be more decisive, since I'm not even sure he knows the best route of attack is. Reigniting that slashing mentality earlier this season will ultimately improve his game so much, since if his shot isn't falling (i.e. now), he won't be an offensive liability like many of our other players are.
Yeah, I know he's a rookie (second round, no less), but hopefully having expectations of him will motivate him to get better.

I find it funny how James Posey is known primarily as a 3-point and Defensive specialist, yet more often than not I see him do nothing but flaunt his clumsiness on defense and clank 3's off the rim. Oh boy, what a baaaaad contract we gave him. We need to get rid of him...and fast.
I am very happy that Okafor has been getting good minutes in the 2nd half these past few games. He really is a difference-maker in clutch situations, and hopefully Bower is observant enough to notice the things he does...ya know, like, REBOUND and block shots and simply exist in the paint on defense. I feel like the only reason he fouled out in Houston was because he was getting more than 20 minutes and forgot how to adjust his game accordingly haha

Glad we won, but we can't keep blowing leads like this. Furthermore, Okafor needs a go-to-move. It's one thing for him to average a double-double, it's another thing to get those stats when it matters.

I am finally happy to see Omeka receiving the minutes he deserves. Do you guys think that his increase in minutes reflects a change in Bower's approach, or is our coach just matching up against our opponents? I am really hoping Bower is making a change, and Omeka will see more playing time.
Regarding Posey- I can understand the argument that Posey's contract was bad due to the length and amount of money, but at that time our bench was very weak and we were one game away from the conference championship when we signed him. Bower went out and paid for one of the most proven free agent 6th men in the game who also won championships with two different teams (remember him defending Kobe), and I am happy our team actually made a huge move to try and become a better team and win a championship. As long as New Orleans has a team we may have to over pay talent to get them to come here. Sorry, most people prefer the big cities and their pizazz over NOLA....it is just the way it is.
But, if ya'll remember the beginning of last season Posey was a totally different player then he is now. Energy, great defense, the 3 point shot!!! The guy was really good. Now it is a different story. I like him, but I feel bad for him some games because the guy seems like it is hard for him to move around- literally. He is depending, in most games, solely on his basketball IQ because of his lack of mobility. Some games he looks better than others and his positioning has even created a few fouls that have won some games for us, but it is seems that he never fully recovered from his off season surgery. Despite this, however, you have to admire the fight in the guy- he is still battling although he looks as stiff as a board.
Personally, we are nearing the half way mark, and I would like for Posey to receive some more rest with hopes that it will get him into better shape. I am not a doctor nor physical therapist so my idea may be nonsense (fair enough), but I think everyone can see that Posey is not moving the way that he should nor is his mobility improving with game time. This problem needs to be addressed, and hopefully his surgery hasn't caused permanent effects in his game. He will never play like he did 6 years ago, but the drop off that we have seen this year is so tremendous I have to attribute it to a severe medical condition. I hope he can recover.

It's a rumor, Julia. That came from an article by Marc Stein of ESPN that talks about the failed deal to trade Devin Brown.
Since Real GM likes to keep their snippets sensational, they left out the parenthetical by Stein that stated it's most likely hopeful thinking by other GMs that the Hornets will move West purely for Luxury Tax relief.

Hornets did a really nice job of frustrating and limiting Wade.
I'm still hoping for losses so that Bower is guaranteed gone and we move older yet valuable players (West, Okafor) for rebuilding pieces, but I have to admit that much of the last 2 games brought back fun memories of seeing the team clicking like old times.
By the way - most NBA teams go weeks, months, or even longer without surrendering a 0-15 run. The Hornets can't manage to go back to back games without doing so.
I used to think it was a Scott-coached team phenomenon (his refusal to take timeouts, etc) but Bower has overseen as high a % of these stretches as Scott ever did.

@ Schwanny: We're gonna have to make some serious moves by the deadline. No way this team gets trapped over the limit with Shinn's health, need to overpay for a new coach/GM next year, and likely drop in full STH's next season (not to mention the economy and looming threat of a lockout).
Everybody who loves this current team needs to enjoy the next 2 months.

In terms of 'rebuilding' a good team that's playing average ball, I'd like to see realistic moves laid out, specific trades, specific salary data, that or CSM reasonaly assume will have a high chance (3/4) of
making the team better in the short and long run. Anything else is both equivalent to saying just waive a magic wand and is not informative for the community.
Devin Brown is playing better. I see that as a success. He's not great, he's not the answer, but it's a sign that things can get better. Him getting better helps us when we use him and in the trade market.
Winning solves everything, yeah?

A few things:
1) I'm glad I wasn't the only person who noticed the officiating was terrible in this game. I haven't complained about it all year but this one was out of control.
2) 12-3 at home (that's pretty darn good). Wins vs Pheonix, Atlanta, Denver, Miami, Dallas. If I'm not mistaken that is 3 of the top 4 teams in the West we've beaten at home so those of you who think we can't even hang with the Western Conference are mistaken in my opinion. Yes, we can't develop the Utah Jazz syndrome and lose every road game but a win is a win. We have beat good teams this year. In fact, the only team worth something that we didn't take down at home was Portland after the B. Scott firing.
3) Can we ban YoungFella? This man is a major buzzkill to anyone and everyone that comes to 24/7 to talk to their fellow Hornets fans about exciting wins and the like. It's always the same too. Whether we win or lose, he is up in arms over the fact that our team sucks. You, sir, are not a Hornets fan. You are a closet Mavericks fan internet troll.

Youngfella shouldn't be banned. He should be allowed to say whatever he wants, within reason, and personally I haven't seen him say anything unreasonable. His points are well-made, even if I (or you) don't agree with him. If you can't take criticism of the Hornets, perhaps blogs aren't for you.

Take criticism? It's not about criticism. All he does is throw around negative comments towards the Hornets every game, win or lose. How can you even say that he makes valid points? He hasn't made ONE positive comment about the Hornets all season. He's on his own personal crusade to try to ruin this season for the rest of us that are trying to enjoy it. It's fine then. He wins and succeeded because I'm done. I don't even feel like reading the comments anymore because this doom and gloom kills all the excitement of wins. But you ARE right. Maybe this blog isn't for me. I can't stand idiots/fair weather fans like YoungFella. Sorry for trying to defend the team that I actually want to see succeed.
Peace out. I will enjoy this season a lot more not having to read about people crying that we are not a championship team 30 games into a season with 4 new rotational players trying to figure out how to work together.

My thoughts..
I don't think YoungFella is an idiot, nor do I think he's a fairweather fan. He just reacts to the team's struggles in a different way than a lot of us do, and has some extreme opinions. I certainly don't think he's trying to ruin the season for anybody. I disagree with a lot of what he says too, and like a lot of you guys the notion of actively rooting for the team to lose is a notion that's foreign to me even if I see the logical sense behind it, but to be fair he has contributed valid opinions to many discussions in the past.
Please keep posting Bees!

Great win it was nice seeing Paul step up big in the 3rd, I'd love to see more of that. Can't wait to see how revenge on Houston turns out. I never like to use officiating as an excuse and the only time I complain is usually against the Lakers, but this game did make me wonder.
@Beesgiving- I can agree with you on YF by pure fact there isn't really any positive things aside from what he just said about Wade, but hey everyone's entitled to their opinion and if it annoys us theyre better off just ignored, he's been involved in enough arguments anyway.

Just for the record so it's clear - I don't WANT us to trade Chris Paul. I'm sorry if it has sounded like that. My concern (and I feel it's a very realistic one) is that the way things are trending maybe trading him would be best for our franchise.
It's important to remember that when Chris Paul signed his extension after our playoff run, he very specifically did NOT sign the max deal because he made it clear he wanted to hold our front office accountable.
Answer honestly - how would you grade our front office since CP3 re-upped with us?

@YF Over the past few years it has been handled terribly, but since Paul signed his extension, you can't say we've done terrible. We had very little wiggle room when his extension was signed, sure Posey was a mistake, but who thought it was a bad idea to sign him when we did? The Okafor trade was also a nice move so you can't say they've done that bad

Happy New Year BeesGiving! New Year to all Hornets fans. Bees perhaps you can do what I do. Before you begin reading posts, scroll down to look at the names. When you see the ones that are always negative no matter how the team is doing, then prepare to skip over those particular posts. Works for me. Not calling out anyone in particular but I've seen it enough. On numerous sites. You don't see them when the team wins. They only come out when the team loses or even if they win, it won't be considered a 'good' win. Something will always be 'wrong'. No, no one expects everything to smell like roses all the time but when people continue to beat the same dead horse, and continue to say the same thing each and every time, it just doesn't make any sense.

@YF- Front office has made mistakes. But they have been spending money. Shinn hasn't pulled a Donald Sterling and refused to spend. Agree with Jib on Posey. What really hurts this team is the lack of contributing drafted players.
Small market team like NOLA needs to draft well and develop those players. Blueprint needs to be: Pay your franchise player, draft well, and fill in holes with smart and cheap free agent signings.
One other thing to consider: the recession truly affected the plans. Bower et al were banking on the tax line rising as it had every year previously. Unfortunately the line dropped this year and will drop further next year. The roster would still be the mess it is right now, but the Hornets wouldn't be over the tax line and desperately looking to dump salary.
