I should have written this post when David West dropped 44 and 12 on the Rockets last week. I didn’t. Part of it was because it happened in a loss. Part of it was because West had been so damn disappointing to that point I had a hard time fighting past my David West-related malaise to acknowledge what had just happened: West had just produced one of the best offensive games in Hornets history.
In fact, he had set two all-time scoring records for the Hornets:
- The Hornet’s regulation game scoring record. (Tying Larry Johnson. Glen Rice(48) and Jamal Mashburn(50) scored more, but they did it with the benefit of an overtime period.)
- Most points scored by a Hornet in a single quarter, with 22. (tying Peja Stojakovic, who did it against Charlotte in his first season with the Hornets)
It was an incredible effort, particularly in the third. The Rockets tried Andersen, Hayes, Landry, Scola and even Shane Battier for a few possessions and none of them could slow West as he drilled hook shots and mid-range jumpers alike. He even reached the rare point where he felt so hot he was spotting up at the three point line for bombs – and sinking them. That was particularly freakish, because West doesn’t shoot threes, even though he probably could. In fact, the Rockets were so certain he wouldn’t shoot them that it wasn’t until his fourth attempt that they bothered closing on him.
For me, when the second three went down, it spurred a fit of exultant giggling.(Yes, I was giggling. Like a little girl. Got a problem with that?) It was so much fun I even debated waking up my uncaring wife to tell her about it. It was a shame the fourth quarter ended up the way it did, because for a while, things were magical.
Happily, another good thing may have come from the game: Since the scoring binge, it seems like David West has been more aggressive, and not just offensively, on both ends of the floor. Yes, he still misses some rotations, but at least he seems to care and tries to cover them. I’m hoping this is a valid observation, and not simply one driven by a bit of residual glow from the Houston game. I’m also hoping that if it is valid, he continues to play like this for the rest of the season.
Because West playing hard again? That would be big. Really big.
What do you think? Has West looked better over the past few games? Or is it because the Rockets and Heat had no athletic forwards to bother him? And while we are at it, is that actually Devin Brown the past few games, or did Terry Koffler entice him into those “dark rituals” we’ve “investigated” before on this blog

I like D. He's my favorite Hornets.
I acknowledge Chris is the most important part of the team for as long as he wants to be.
I just like D West, and I said as much in my season ticket holder survey.
He's mean. He doesn't have Gummiberry juice like Chris, but he just gets down and doesn't take ... Stuff ... From the bad guys. I loved him tapping Dirk's face in the good season. Loved it.
Utah is 12-5 at home. We can take 'em.

D West is my favourite NBA player. Probably because people say I play with similar intensity on the court, i.e. I can get angry.
Seeing that 44 points was to me unbelivable, when he went for that second three I jumped up held my arms in the air with 3 fingers pointed upright and when he sunk it..."YOU CANNOT STOP THE MAN, GIVE HIM THAT ROCK" Haha
But when he plays on defense its another story. I think he is hustling more but I also think the rotations have a lot to do with what David thinks his teammates are going to do. Well see how he shapes up againts the Jazz and Boozer but hopefully if he plays with the same swagger he had back in our playoff run we can get into the 7th and 8th seeds.

I agree with the notion that he's playing hard again, but it seems to be mostly on offense. His rebounding and defense is where I'd like to see an improvement. Not too long ago I considerd him a good defensive player.
If he starts trying on both ends, and Peja gets some HGH, we could be looking good.

Ryan, I had to laugh when reading your post as at the same moment you were giggling I found my Fiancee asking from the kitchen what I was giggling at as well. She, a rabid Hornets fan, had to stop cooking and come and watch because I was so besides myself with how David seemed like he was daring the ball not to go in.
I just found it hilarious that the offensive burst caused the same reaction in more than one home.

David has always used a pissed mindset to perform well. He develloped aggressiveness because the refs did't call fouls on his "and one" shouts and stuff. Somehow, he has been too relaxed this season. Maybe he got too mature to be pissed all the time. Maybe he has to find other ways to get there again. I think he has never been a great defender though. Almost none of the players on the roster are great defenders. Defense is a team issue plus a certain amount of efford. I do believe he looked better recently. They just have to win some road games and the playoffs are right there!

I can't say I've noticed him being any better defensively the past two games. I saw him miss a few typical defensive rotations on Saturday against Houston, although some of them came early when he was trying not to pick up a third foul.

Its funny about DWest. Early in the first, he didn't go for a rebound. He was in position, but he just didn't move, didn't box out, didn't do anything but watch as Scola got the rebound and the Rockets scored, starting their scoring run. Despite his otherworldly scoring that game, I couldn't forgive him for his lack of hustle on that one play the rest of the game. Strangely, he seemed to also be pissed about it because I didn't see any lack of hustle the rest of the game or any since.
Every time I talk smack about Devin Brown, he shows up and does something. Im still gonna talk smack about him every time he gets the ball, but I have to admit I would rather see him on the floor than cap space these days.

I'm liking the new Devin Brown, reminds me of the Devin Brown we had a few years ago.

I'm liking Devin this season, too, but his trade value will probably never be higher so I'm all for shipping him out. After all, it's not like he's the guy to put the Hornets over the top and Marcus Thornton should benefit from some extra PT.

Devin is playing rather well right now. As most players do in contract seasons. His contract probably won't be from the Hornets but hey, it's a contract right? It's work and it's money so if he wants to remain in this league, he's doing what he's gotta do.
Not to jack this thread or anything but have you all been placing All-Star votes for CP3?

Brown is one of those players that can easily be replaced so I wouldn't mind it either. It would be good for Thornton as well and New Orleans needs him to develop too due to problems on the wings. If he gets his 3 going again it would greatly help out with Peja being on the cold streak he is on.
@Queenbee- I actually went through the process of making an NBA account to do it, I'm voting as much as possible;)

@Jib-Cool! I actually vote twice a day. Both from NBA.com and texting via T-Mobile (Text Paul to 69622). I don't think it costs (although I have unlimited texting) so I try to get in 2 votes per day. :)

Agreed on trading Brown. He's a this and we need a that. 'dems da breaks.
I'm just glad he's helping in the meantime and is upping his stock, basically making the replacement player better, if we get one back.

@Queenbee: That is a good idea, I don't care if it costs me, if Paul makes it then I'll be happy with a litte money out of my wallet haha.

Just saw somewhere on ESPN, the Hornets have 11 of their next 16 on the road.....
Perfect time for West to be having this scoring outburst.

i'm still mad at west for getting Byron Fired. He is a puss.....Why cant a guy play hard all the time? Trade him now before he gets apathetic again.

@beedogg- I hate to be one of the first to disagree since the commenting blog, but West didn't get Byron fired. Is he inconsistent when it comes to playing hard? Yes. But everyone, even Paul at some points, stopped playing hard under Byron. Losing mentalities set in during this time and continred until he was fired. Don't get me wrong I have my issues with West too due to his defense of course.

Isn't Devin's contract only 1 million this year?
If it is 1 mil I think we should keep him. We are not going to find anyone producing like he is for that price, and giving Hilton away (3.5 mil?) will get us under the cap or close to it. The guy isn't even dressing out, and I think there are some teams who would be interested in a backup big for that price.
West had an amazing game for 44- Big D West- but I am still seeing less effort from him on the defensive side and his rebounding. His offense is tremendous like always, but I think as he is getting older he is becoming more and more of a one dimensional player. At least the guy can shoot.
Did Jesus say gummiberry juice? AWESOME!!!!
