That game was bundles of fun. The Hornets were getting pushed around early and giving up easy baskets, but played some great defense beyond the first quarter and ran the ball about as well as I've seen all season. Devin Brown had himself a career night and Chris Paul came up clutch to give the Hornets just their third road win of the season, and their first in Utah in almost four years.
91-87 the final score (box).
Chris Paul vs. Deron Williams
We'll get this out of the way first. Deron had a much steadier than Chris game tonight, finishing with 17 points (6-11 FGs) and 11 assists. He landed hard after making a layup midway through the fourth and hurt his right arm. He didn't make much noise after that.
Chris struggled a whole lot through the first three quarters, only getting his first field goal with 2:19 left in the third. He was money down the stretch though, repeatedly using a high pick to shed Williams and then blowing right by Millsap for layups. CP finished with 12 points (5-15 FGs) and 9 assists.
Perhaps the biggest play of the game was Paul's steal with 45 seconds left and the Hornets ahead 86-82. David West had just turned it over trying to kick it out of the post, and Williams led the break with Andrei Kirilenko streaking and only Chris between them. Somehow CP contorted around and got a hand on the bounce pass, making up for a lazy missed three not a minute earlier. He then came down, took another high screen and left Millsap in the dust. Game over.
Emeka Okafor
If ever a stat line didn't do a performance justice, it was Emeka Okafor's tonight. The boxscore reports 5 points, 8 boards and 3 blocks for the big man, but his fingerprints were all over this win. Carlos Boozer was abusing David West in the first quarter with Okafor on the bench due to foul trouble. Okafor took the Booz assignment when he got back in the game and did a much better job of it.
Beyond the three blocks, I also counted five shots that Emeka disrupted, and he was constantly in there battling for rebounds and creating opportunities for his teammates on the boards. His biggest play was the offensive rebound he chased down and saved with about three minutes left in the game, getting the ball back out to CP and ending up on top of the Jazz bench. Phenomenal hustle.
Oh, and those picks that Chris Paul found so helpful? Okafor set them all.
Devin Brown
A 30-point outburst for Devin Brown tonight, a career-high for him and an amused face for me. He shot 11-of-20 from the field, including 5-of-8 from downtown. Ridiculous. To quote his fake Twitter feed:
Hey Utah, how's that 30 burger tasting? Devin all inside ya mouth!
Besides knocking down those triples, much credit to him for running the floor and finishing well on the break. We needed all he had tonight with Paul and Peja struggling to score.
One thing that bugged me about Devin in this one: several times he got taken out of the defense by the softest of screens. I guess we can't expect miracles from him on both ends.
Thoughts on the Jazz
They didn't look all that sharp, and lacked the offensive discipline I'm used to seeing from them. Really they should have been blowing the Hornets out in the first half, but they missed a lot of easy looks and failed to stretch that lead. I thought they would have been better off pulling Mehmet Okur earlier and rolling with both Millsap and Boozer inside, since West was having trouble guarding the post.
David West
As mentioned, Boozer made West look silly early, out-muscling and out-pacing him repeatedly. West more than made up for that on the other end though, display a smooth shooting stroke all night and finishing with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting. He also had 9 boards, 3 steals and 2 blocks.
Also to his credit, West handled Millsap surprisingly well in the fourth quarter, stepping up his defensive effort right when the Hornets needed it most. I noted him hustling hard several times; helping, challenging, boxing out. I'm long past hoping for him to sustain that kind of effort for an entire game, just glad to see it during crucial stretches.
Bullets to finish...
- Morris Peterson got some PT for the first time since November. He knocked in a corner three, missed two more, grabbed two boards and turned it over twice in nine minutes. Nothing special. I have to admit I don't have much faith in him at this point -- I don't think he can do much besides spot up -- but I'm all for Bower giving him a few games to see if he's got anything left. A string of DNP's for Marcus Thornton though and I'll change my tune.
- Darius Songaila missed three open jumpers in this game. I scratched my head.
- I should really give the Hornets D more praise. The Jazz average 100 points on 48.4 percent shooting, but tonight saw them score just 87 on 37.9 percent shooting. Amazing considering they poured in 32 points in the first quarter.
- I liked Collison's effort in 11 minutes tonight. He got some time against Williams and didn't back down, battling him hard in the post. Collison also pushed the tempo nicely and stayed poised in the half court. Pity he lost that ball out of bounds on the fast break at one point; looked like he was fixing to flush that one. You'd have been seeing it over and over on Sportscenter had he kept it together.
So, .500 at last. Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Quite a win. Best win since last season.

Can't help but wonder if the Jazz missing five open layups had a lot to do with the win. They won't be that many of those too often.
Paul had a few crucial rebounds, and for the most part kept Williams uninvolved. I LOVED how he was attacking Deron's hurt arm in the final minutes. Check the first defensive series back-- Paul is all over the arm, ensuring Deron's ineffectiveness throughout the last few plays. It reminded me of stuff Jordan used to do.
Mo-P? Not an answer unless two years on the bench changed him.
It's odd seeing Songaila miss jumpers.
I might buy a Devin Brown Jersey, even though I finally settled on an Okafor one.
The defense looked awesome. We are finally seeing Okafor being fully implemented. He's clutch on the defensive end. I can't recall him missing a shot late in a close game either. Not even once.
Oh, the kicker- I bet a bundle on the Hornets this game, the first I've ever bet on us against the Jazz. It went off at +310.
With one good trade, we can be the three seed this year.

Also I couldn't help thinking that the time keeper was a bit of a Jazz fan. Anyone else see that or am I just drunk?

I wasn't a fan of CP's shot selection from long range. All four of his attempts (even the one with the shot clock winding down) could have been made into smarter posessions...but I really can't complain because he was absolutely clutch down the stretch. That steal was sick!!
In the first few minutes of this game, I was having fits because it was looking like another Jazz domination of the Bees....but I'm very proud of the way the team played from then on. They fought hard on defense, and West put forth a great effort on both ends.
Peja was pure dirt today. Terrible shot selection to say the least. Let's hope Marcus can start getting some PT again. Bower should know by now that he's going to be way more effective than Mo Pete. Sorry Mo.
Big Win. This could be a big boost in morale for the team now that they have finally beaten the Jazz in Utah...I'm hoping this can put an end to their road woes and make a run! It's worthy to note that the Hornets can do this considering their upcoming schedule:
- @ Oklahoma (while competitive, they aren't exactly dominant at home. If we can win this, then the following can be a mean streak for the Hornets)
- New Jersey (any questions?)
- @ Washington (this team is in turmoil now)
- @ Philadelphia (not exactly awe-inspiring)
- LA Clippers (2-0 so far against them. Hornets at home)
- @ Detroit (average team)
- @ Indiana (demoralized without Granger)
So, while not for sure, these next 7 games are VERY winnable for us. LETS GO

wow...ths upcoming schedule looks great on paper...i really hope the hornets pull through these games....but i always think about earlier in the season when we lost to the knicks and raptors twice, and the same okc team. Just play smart ball and we'll be okay!

I've noticed Songaila takes quite a bit of open jumpers up top, with mixed results. Has that been the norm for him during his career?
@Joe: Normally I hate it when a player exploits a disadvantaged attribute, but that's where the killer instinct plays in the greats like Kobe, CP, and like you said, Jordan. I'll never understand how they sleep at night.

Wow. The Jazz were really killing us, but we really stepped it up and handed their butts to them. In their home building no less.
On a side note, what happened to Williams posting Paul up? This is the first Utah-NO game I've watched and I don't know if Utah does this a lot, but they were posting Williams up in the 1st Q and it went pretty well, and they went away from it later on in the game.

From BDL: "Earlier this year, Devin Brown(notes) decided to stop jumping on his three-point attempts. He's now offering a flat-footed fling from behind the arc, and the results have been pretty potent."
You guys see any truth to this? In the highlights he still kind of jumps a little bit, but maybe there is something to this. I don't have any video of his shot last year or early this year. I thought we were gonna go with "sold his soul to the Devil," rather than "stopped jumping," but hey whatever works.

Best win of the season, no doubt. To paraphrase Gil McGregor, "That was no monkey the Hornets got off their backs tonight. That was the Abdominal Snowman." While I don't know what exactly the Abdominal Snowman is (Niall believes he is a snow creature with a 6pack), I echo Gil's sentiment; possible season-changing great win. If I may though, let me temper the excitement by saying this win IMPROVES our record to 3-13 on the road. There is still a tough stretch to go this month with 10 out of 16 remaining games away from N.O. Arena. I'll be delighted if the Hornets can have a +1 or +2 road record this month.

I heard that from Gil and gut laughed.
I think the abdominal snow man is that pooch we all have that goes away when things get hothothot...
I was happy with the win, with the overall level of play and how they handled the early challenge by changing the game, and with the overall trajectory we're on of late. We're getting better. Time will tell to what degree.
We still need hope, but at least we have it.

I about died over the Abdominal Snowman. I.... have no idea. CST was in rare form last night. They had the score wrong at least once, and Darius Songaila was an odd purpley shade on my TV. After watching other teams' broadcasts for the last 2-3 weeks (either that or being at the game) it's apparent how low the picture quality is on CST. Ugh. Gil is actually really knowledgeable about the game if you've ever listened to him in person. I wish he and Bob would dispense some of that knowledge instead of trying to one up each other with stupid wordplay, but I know I'll continue to wish that for, well, a long time. Sigh.

the "abdominal snowman" is Gil mispronouncing "abominable snowman." haha, still funny either way. the abominable snowman is an unverified conspiracy creature also referred to sometimes as the "Yeti." This creature is essentially the arctic version of Bigfoot. So having the abominable snowman off their backs (and not just a monkey) is meant to be something huuuge for them hah

"In the first half, the Jazz trapped Paul and sent three defenders at him to close the lane when he tried to penetrate."
3 defenders? Seriously? I mean I know Sloan has game planned for CP3 over the last 2 seasons or so the way most coaches game plan for 'superstars', even when CP wasn't quite at superstar status but 3 defenders? LOL! Sloan must really want to throw the kitchen sink at him. LOL! The difference in tonights game over last season's matchups is that while CP3 played well and won out statistically last season, his teammates never did crap. Now of course that could have a lot to do with CP having more energy while his teammates legs fell completely off seeing as they'd on a few occasions have to meet the Jazz on the tail end of a back to back. Tonight, West and mainly Devin Brown came to play. I even give Posey props. He hit a couple of nice shots and grabbed a few nice rebounds. When I saw Mo enter the game I thought to myself "Hey! They dusted off Mo!" Yeah, he hit a nice 3 pointer but truth be told, they didn't dust him off, they only took him off the shelf. LOL! Good win Hornets!

Something a lil concerning to me at least is the play of Peja lately. In his last five games he's gone for 8, 0, 6, 5 and 5. I'm curious if that's because of a slump or because it's getting later in the season. I think it's something to keep an eye on at least

I never thought I'd say this:
Devin Brown is now a better three-point shooter than Peja.
He is also the most consistent threat from downtown for the Hornets.

Deron Williams missed practice today and is due to get an MRI on that sprained wrist. More info: http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_14126165
@LSUhornet17: Interesting about Devin's threes. I hadn't noticed a change in the way he's been shooting them, but I can check some game tape from earlier in the season and get back to you.
@urgmasdaughter: Peja is definitely slumping, but I think Utah and Houston are always tough for him. He didn't get many clean looks in any of those three games.

Peja took some hard contact at the end of the Miami game, and he seemed to be favoring his lower back. That is not good news. Hopefully it was just a little stiffness.

You know, I can't say I've noticed Peja favoring his back though. I kept a close eye on him Saturday against Houston, and he was cutting and moving as normal from what I could see.

Niall is right. Both Utah and Houston have always been tough for Peja. I rarely expect anything out of him when we meet these 2 teams. Last night I was yelling, "DON'T SHOOT THE BALL PEJA!! GIVE THE BALL TO DEVIN!" LOL! Sounded strange coming out of my mouth but I had to say it. Thing about his back is he doesn't seem to be stiff or moving differently so it's hard for us as fans to tell if his back is bothering him. Unless he's moving funny or wincing how else would us fans be able to tell if his back is bothering him? We certainly can't feel what he's feeling. I guess we'll see how he responds in the next game. This game was a great win for us and a good start to out road trip, but I am putting more weight on the Thunder game coming up. Utah gave us too many chances last night with ridiculous turnovers and missed lay ups, and I am hoping that the Thunder are able to challenge us without those Utah mistakes to see how we respond. I think it is the perfect scenario for us with OKC because it is a familiar court with somewhat friendly fans and they are a strong opponent currently ranked as a playoff seed but not a powerhouse. A win tomorrow could really set off something spectacular with the upcoming schedule. Geaux Hornets
@TickTock- I am glad I am not the only one questioning the picture quality of the broadcast. It is absolutely horrible, and my eyes always hurt for the first couple of minutes of the game until they adjust. I am dreaming of the day that Shinn drops COX although it probably won't happen.
Recently it seems like almost every game this year, especially at home, is undecided until the final few minutes or seconds of the game. This has been the most exciting 500 season that I can remember thus far.

Cox has terrible quality, no argument there. If I were to get NBA League Pass could I watch all Nola games in better quality as well?
That OKC game I think can be big as well. Russell Westbrook is athletic and a good finisher, and not to mention Kevin Durant will likely dominate whoever not named Julian Wright we put on him. I can see West taking advantage down low also.

This coming game is the second chance we've had to get over .500. It's against a playoff caliber team, which is more than half the NBA, but still. It's against a team, like Houston and Utah, we are battling with for a playoff spot. We'll be just one game out of the playoffs with the win. It would be our first 4 game win streak of the year.
This one is big for lots of reasons.

This is a better Ast/TO ratio than Devin Brown, Marcus Thornton, David West, and Julian Wright

Yep, CP said that some things were said between he and Hodge. He said Hodge said something 'personal'. He didn't want to say what but some have said that Hodge (along with the NC State crowd) were saying things about CP's grandfather. CP acknowledges that he made a boneheaded young kid mistake.
