The news was broken this afternoon by Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo! Sports:
The New Orleans Hornets have traded center Hilton Armstrong and cash to the Sacramento Kings in a salary-clearing move, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The deal removes Hilton’s $2.8 million salary from the Hornets’ payroll, leaving them only a little more than $500,000 over the luxury-tax threshold. The Kings will send the Hornets a future, conditional second-round pick.
Jimmy Smith of the Times-Picayune reports confirmation of the deal, also from a league source, so it seems it's as good as done. (Update: Hornets.com makes it official.) A few things running through my mind:
- Why did the Hornets do this? The big and obvious answer is money, as Wojnarowski stated. If the Hornets can now dump the contract of someone like Bobby Brown or Ike Diogu, they're under the $69.9 million luxury-tax threshold and won't have to pay the dollar-for-dollar penalty.
- Not only do the Hornets get that $2.8 million off the books immediately with this trade, but they also save themselves the $3.85 million qualifying offer Armstrong would have been owed next season. No other team would have offered Hilton more than that as a restricted free agent in the summer, so the Hornets would have been stuck with him. Update: As noted in the comments, this is incorrect. "If the Hornets didn't want Hilton on their roster next year, they simply need to NOT extend the Qualifying Offer to him next year. The QO applies only if a team wants to make a player coming off a rookie contract a Restricted Free Agent instead of an Unrestricted one. If Armstrong is not extended a QO, which is the team's right, he merely becomes a UFA."
- Armstrong had clearly fallen out of favor with head coach Jeff Bower, racking up eleven consecutive DNP-CD's despite being one of the few healthy bigs available with Sean Marks and Ike Diogu out injured.
- When Armstrong did play, he didn't play well. His averages this season: 2.8 points and 3.4 rebounds in just over 13 minutes per game. He's currently ranked as the fifth worst center in the entire NBA with a 7.75 PER (and look who's three spots above him). According to PER, Armstrong's best season was 2006-07, his rookie campaign, and even then he was worse than average.
- As we saw from the near-trade of Devin Brown a couple of weeks ago, the Hornets were desperate to shed salary. Thankfully that deal didn't work out, because today's trade of Armstrong works out better for them in almost every way possible. The only downside I can see is that Amrstrong was a big body who could step in and at least deliver six fouls per game if another of the Hornets bigs were to suffer an injury.
Overall, this trade doesn't make the Hornets any better or worse right now, but it saves George Shinn some money and avoids Bower having to resort to trading someone like David West to shed salary. Whether that's a good thing or just a delay of the inevitable is up for debate.

My bad, didn't realize it was Insider. Tyson Chandler is three spots above Hilton, 51st overall among centers. Emeka Okafor checks in at 16 with a PER of 17.32, right between Kendrick Perkins and Erick Dampier.

Can't say enough good about this move. Really, really curious how they shed that last $500,000, but am less worried about it being a key guy right now.
Glad to see Bower isn't afraid to part ways with the mistakes of the past.

One step closer to getting the front office from whining about money, and can now focus solely on basketball :)

I'm tired hearing the fans whine about money too. Like I said in another thread there seems to be more talk about team finances than there is actual basketball on Hornets forums nowadays. I'm happy with this. Armstrong was doing nothing for this team.

Whats the Kings side of this trade. Are they so desperately in need of abig man, or are they just friendly?
I kinda liked Hilton. But mainly as a person. On the court he was more a liability than anything. I am just glad (so far) that hollingers projected trade (which was including darius) didnt really happen.
One question: I heard about the injury exceptions. Couldnt Ike fal under that? That way his salary wouldnt count against the cap and make the hornets eligible for the luxury tax rewards of about 4,5 mio $ after this season.

Good move. Saves cash and doesn't hurt the team at all.
I always rooted for Hilton... seems like a solid guy, but the unfortunate truth is that he just doesn't seem to be cut out to be a rotation player in the NBA. I'm glad Bower finally nixed the Armstrong experiment... for whatever reason Armstrong was one of the few young guys that Byron gave a ton of chances too, but he never really improved.
I wish him well.

@ berlinhornets: I forgot that Hollinger named the Kings as an ideal trade partner for the Hornets just a few days ago. Credit where it's due: http://bit.ly/4TML0G
As for your other questions, I have no idea why the Kings were willing to take on Armstrong. I really don't see an upside for them in this. Maybe time will tell.
Regarding an injury exception, I believe those only work for teams who are decimated by injuries and need to exceed the 15-player roster limit so they can suit up enough healthy bodies for a game. (The Warriors got an injury exception just a few weeks ago.) I don't think it makes any difference to the salary cap though.
Then there's insurance. As I understand it, NBA teams take out insurance so if a player with a guaranteed contract goes down injured, the insurance company pays his salary, but that salary still counts against the team's cap unless the injury is career-ending and the player is forced to retire.

Good Luck Hilton!
@Max- I cannot recall one instance (correct me if I'm wrong) where the front office "whined" about its money issues. They admitted that the Butler trade helped their financial situation, but I don't think that was whining. We have a much better front office than that.
@Queen- I also don't recall the people "whining" about the Hornets finances unless they were reporters in favor of trading CP3, and those guys are ridiculous. There has been good discussions here regarding possible trades like this one to get below the cap, but that is only a result of observing the obvious state of the Hornet's finances. That is an example of a Hornet's issue being discussed, but I think the "whining" description, woth regards to our bloggers, is a little unfair.

@Niall thanks for the info.
Now, I just hope (I never thought Id say this) they dont dump devin for salary purposes. We still need him in the starting spot, since marcus is not ready and is a perfect spark from the bench but not really more for now. Maybe there are some takers for Ike (even though Id like him for next season), Sean or Bobby. Lets see what happens.
I am relieved...a little

I'm a little surprised that the Kings accepted this deal too - at least as constituted. There are a bunch of teams that would be helped by shedding $3-4 million, and the Hornets only offered cash with Hilton. The Kings are in financial trouble right now - though the unbelievable Tyreke Evans(AKA Wade 2.0) is helping there - so I know why they did the deal.
The Kings could have gotten anything between 500k-$1mill from the Hornets due to the pro-rated salary of Hilton and trade rules, but it surprises me that some other team wasn't willing to top that sort of offer.
Bobby Brown, Sean Marks, and Ike Diogu are all options now to be shipped out. The Hornets are bound to find someone to take one of them for cash, and then the Hornets will get to cash in on the $4.5 million payout made at the end of the season to teams under the Luxury Tax Line.
Ahhh, Finances.

How conditional is the draft pick? If it's one of those that will never get dealt unless the Kings finish in the top five records in the NBA or something, I guess the Kings get a player without giving up anything in hopes that the player decides to prove his doubters wrong. It will be an annual event I bet, the Hornets fire sale to get under the cap.

Keeping Devin is definitely better than Thornton becoming a starter for the reasons mentioned above. Can Bower work some more magic, and make some moves that keeps us under the cap while bringing in a more accomplished 2 guard? This will be interesting.

Good move as I see it. Less risk of dumping valuable people straight out.
It'd nice to get a Bobby-Brown-level center for Bobby Brown just to have a big body.
Then we work on the 3 spot, then the 2.
Make it so.
Engage.

I can't imagine the Hornets getting rid of Bobby Brown when they just put him on the team. I'm not a fan of him at all, but I'd rather see Posey, Marks, and Peterson out the door. We need young and healthy studs -- no brokeback.

From sacbee.com
"According to Armstrong's agent, Sam Goldfeder, the teams are waiting for the trade call from the league. The deal also includes cash coming Sacramento's way. Armstrong is in the final year of his deal and will be paid $2.8 million this season. He gives the Kings much-needed depth, length and athleticism in the frontcourt and is low risk because of his contract. It's a far cry from a couple months ago, when the Kings considered trading for Hornets big man Emeka Okafor and his enormous contract. More to come... - Sam Amick"

For any Kings fans reading this, Tom Ziller has a pretty good breakdown of what Armstrong brings to the Sacramento:
http://www.sactownroyalty.com/2010/1/11/1245514/is-hilton-armstrong-what-the-kings
Ziller talks almost exclusively about defense there though. His summation: "[Armstrong] has proven to be a mediocre rebounder at best, a decent shotblocker but overall a player with only minor positive impacts on defense."

This is a good trade, but does put the Hornets in kind of a precarious position, at least until Marks gets healthy. Now the only "bigs" on the bench are Songaila and Wright. I can't help but think, "Hmmm, maybe Bower DID have an exit strategy just in case things turned south on this season."
Now.... let us all pray for Okafor's health.

@ downtownd -- the "whining" i am referring to is a bit of an exaggeration, but what I mean is that this entire year, the front office has certainly placed an ENORMOUS emphasis on getting under the salary cap. The financial issues for this team have hovered over their heads so much to the point that it took priority over basketball itself.
Their desperateness to get under the luxury tax is what has caused sports analysts, reporters, and NBA fans to spread all of these pathetic rumors that the Hornets intend to trade West, CP, or Okafor just to save money. So when I say they "whine" i just mean that maybe now (with another move of a minimal contract) the Hornets front office can stop urgently looking for scenarios to save money and can focus solely on team success, and people like us don't have to deal with the frustration of hearing morons drool over ways to steal away our good players. Thats all.

Trade Hilton for a conditional 2nd round draft pick in 2015 and we trade Rasual Butler for a conditional 2nd round draft pick in 2016. At least when CP3 retires we'll have some help in the draft. haha
Said this earleir but I'd like to B. Brown packaged with one of the three "P's in a Pod" (Peterson, Posey, Peja) for some help at the 2 or 3 maybe even a back-up Center. Best thing I like about Bobby Brown is his contribution ON the bench. Everytime we make a big play he's the enegetic kid off the bench cheerin on the Hornets. That enthusiasm is really cool to see

Nice move by the front office. Team has to get under the tax to avoid paying dollar for dollar and also to qualify for the pay out, as Ryan said.
Move another small contract, get under the tax line, make it to the playoffs for at least 2 home games (revenue) and you have to be happy if you're in the Hornets front office considering the bind you put yourself in.

I understand that the pump-posts-out-there-right-here-and-now news cycle doesn't involve adhering to journalistic rigor, but a basic check on NBA salary rules is important, IMO.
If the Hornets didn't want Hilton on their roster next year, they simply need to NOT extend the Qualifying Offer to him next year. The QO applies only if a team wants to make a player coming off a rookie contract a Restricted Free Agent instead of an Unrestricted one. If Armstrong is not extended a QO, which is the team's right, he merely becomes a UFA.

Sorry about the snarky tone of that comment... I only meant to offer a constructive critism.
Also, NBA Salary Cap rules are only third in complexity to Rocket Science (TM) and Brain Surgery (TM). You're more than forgiven for having missed a tiny one. :)
