The New Orleans Hornets have rescinded their offer to guard Luther Head after he reportedly failed his physical, the TP is reporting. Head was expected to immediately compete for backup minutes in the back court, and potentially would have been Chris Paul's primary backup had Darren Collison been traded.
Head was the only new player the Hornets had made a contract offer to this summer and the withdrawal of his offer leaves the Hornets with only three guards on the roster, Chris Paul, Darren Collison and Marcus Thornton.
Aubrey Coleman, who led the NCAA in scoring last year and is on the Hornets summer league roster, could potentially be a cheaper alternative to Head. He's averaging 15 points in the last two games of Summer League on only nine shots per game. His defense is a concern, but for a minimum deal of around 500k a year, the Hornets can afford to take a chance.
[Update] Marc Bartelstein, Luther Head's agent, unloaded on the Hornets, soon afterwards:
"I've been doing this 25 years. I've never had a situation like this ever happen," Bartelstein said. "All you can do is pay attention to people's actions and draw your own conclusions.
"This is a business that is supposed to be based upon trust and handshakes and being able to make deals where you trust people's intentions," Bartelstein continued. "I made a deal with Jeff Bower. If a team had an issue with a physical, you would never ever get a phone call saying, 'The deal's been rescinded. We're moving on.' The team would call you and say, 'Hey, we've got something we're concerned about in the physical. Let's figure out a way to work around it. Let's deal with it.' Maybe you put an exception to a particular injury [in the contract]. You would discuss it. You wouldn't just flat-out rescind the contract and say, 'That's it, we're moving on,' with no communication unless your intentions are something else."
The Hornets have since responded with the following statement:
"We can appreciate Mark's passion for his clients and understand his disappointment," said Team President Hugh Weber. "It is our procedure for a player to undergo a thorough physical examination before a contract can be finalized. After consulting with our medical team, the Hornets organization feels that it is not in our best interest to move forward with the signing."

Coleman fits more naturally at the 2.
Too bad for Head though. I was hoping it work out for the dude. Tyson found a place to rest his toe, so hopefully Head can find a place to rest his whathaveyou.
Marquis Daniels then?
Aaron Gray is quite the matzo ball hanging out there as well . . . is the delay perhaps a Sonderleiter effect?
Everything is flowing like molasses these days, except the oil. Chris news, firing Bower, trades, free agents, even the oil recovery. I feel like I'm living in a Leonard Cohen song. Let's play some Bosstones, how about that, Life? Yeah, I'm talking to you!
I suppose its a math conducive environment, so I should be happy.

True about Coleman, but again, message control was the downfall of Bower. CP3 is not going to see bringing another deck chair onto the Titanic as change he can believe in. They need to get the new GM in place yesterday, and he needs to make some impact moves in short order to upgrade the roster. There has to be some urgency about a commitment to being a winner. Spare parts can come later.

Was hoping Luther Head would work out. Hopefully Coleman can have a strong showing. Also, I heard a new trade rumor today, thought I'd ask about it here for some thoughts. Deal with the Suns...
Jason Richardson and Earl Clark for David West/James Posey/Future 2nd Round Pick
It'd be nice to move Posey's contract. Richardson is around 14 million expiring and could start allowing Thorton to be the bench sparkplug for another year. However, the other parts seem like a downgrade. Why get Clark when we just drafted Q-Pon. And moving West here leaves a GIANT issue at the starting four unless they could weasel a free agent or another trade somehow.

Agreed on that Suns idea.
It'd be nice to find a team with a deep front court who wants DC, and trade our front court plus for theirs. Massive swap.
I'd be happy just swapping junk with another team to see if their junk comes to life here and vice versa. There has to be another Wright out there in this world we call the NBA. Same for Posey. Songaila. I'd keep our Peja over someone else's.
I have no beef with Gray; he's below consideration. Same with Marks.
I'd trade Okafor for a different one, I suppose, but I'd like to see how he plays at Christmas.

I actually would have liked to see Head play for the hornets. But its not that much of a big thing. Lets get Coleman and Brewer (and Barnes) and Id be mor happy than before. Head wasnt the answer anyway. Aubrey comes cheaper and leaves more money for other signings. Although, Monty wasnt too happy about the guard play last time around. That meany Coleman too, right?

I want Brewer. I think he is the perfect 4th guard for this team.

What about Shannon Brown, unrestricted free agent SG from the Lakers? He opted out of his contract to get into the free agency fun, yet hoping to return to the Lakers. But Kobe's strong recruiting of Raja Bell and his expected signing all but definitely dismisses Shannon Brown from the Lakers priorities. They'd have Steve Blake, Derek Fisher, Kobe, Sasha, and Raja Bell.
Brown is extremely athletic--a human pogo, as they call him in LA. He's got range on the jumper. He's quick. He can slash. He's a playmaker. He and Chris Paul could do some damage. He's the answer fiscally AND basketball-wise. I really like this guy. Thoughts?

I would like Brown too. Wouldnt Brown and Brewer be possible. Brewer has the size to slide and guard the SF of this league and as you said Brown is just an athletic freak. I'd be very happy if we signed these two. Only problem, neither one of them is a threat from the outside (enter Barnes? ;-) - that would be too much though I guess.

@Ryanalexanderhornet
Breezy is a 1 who could be moved to a 2. He's not a 3 or 4. You guys realize that right? Also, what is the fascination with Brewer? He's been in the league for four years, averages four buckets and a steal. What is the attraction?

He is a solid defender. And he has some much needed height since all of our guards are undersized. He is a team player and knows the game as he doesn't make many turnovers... He can't shoot tho but he is young and maybe monty can make him into a star... Or at least a servicable starting 2.

sounds like we basically just retracted the offer w/o a legit reason/explanation. ummm, not a good way to run a franchise.

Sorry, got to nip this in the bud. As I said elsewhere:
C'mon guys. You're surprised Head's agent refuted he failed his physical? If he doesn't, who the hell is going to give Head a chance to sign with them? A physical failure is deadly when it comes to getting a contract offer.
If there was no actual reason for him to fail a physical, this would be a lawsuit, because the Hornets would be wrongfully damaging Luther Head's ability to earn a living in the NBA. Since there is no lawsuit, you can assume there was a perfectly valid reason for the failure.

Fair enough, Ryan. Still it's an odd twist since the Pacers gave him a clean bill of health.

I'm sure the physical the Pacers gave to an out-going player they probably weren't going to bring back was very thorough. Oh, and yeah, they didn't bring him back either.
Sorry Joe, for slamming you about this, but this brand of speculation irritates me. When OKC rejected Chandler, everyone mocked OKC. He hasn't been in good shape since then. When Shareef Abdur-Rahim was rejected by New Jersey for a bad knee four years ago, everyone thought they were insane and the Kings signed him instead. He didn't even last a year. The Hornets rejected Steven Hunter for a bad knee about 5 seasons ago during a mid-season trade. Hunter hurt his knee at his next stop and hasn't played more than a handful of games a year before exiting the league.
Teams don't go after players and then get cold feet and use a doctor's physical to get out of a contract. The potential damage and fiscal liability is too great.

To be honest I feel like I desrve to be ripped on a little. With all the craziness going on lately I just got a little carried away. The timing with Bower's departure and the agents statement got me going.
And I've been writing for like 10 hours straight.

Woj is on the attack now too. He's tweeting all kinds of stuff about how awful Weber is and how this is clearly Weber trying to get out of a deal.
The Hornets can't release the results of the physical to defend themselves, but they really should consider making a statement to get out ahead of this.

The inescapable conclusion is the Head was the piece we needed to win a title, and the league is forcing us to do this so we'll look bad and end up losing so Paul goes to the Knicks to play with Head there. Big 5: Lopez, Paul, Anthony, Stoudemire, Head.

Yeah, exactly my reaction, Ryan. And who exactly has a monetary, vested interest in saying "But my client is healthy!" ..... Right. The agent.
Personally I don't trust the agent or Hugh Weber as far as... well, at all. At least where the truth is concerned. Therefore as a fan I'm just going to sit back and say 'whatever' since there's no way to get the real truth out of either party here. Anyhow Mark Bartelstein has 2 clients already on our roster, so "I don't do business this way! Ever!" is clearly BS, since he does business with our front office all the time (Posey, Songaila, and formerly Pargo as well).
