With 2.3 seconds left, Craig Brackins hit a three pointer which could have given the New Orleans Hornets their first summer league victory of 2010. In the end it wound up being just another nice shot by the Hornets rookie. Washington guard Lester Hudson hit a crowd pleasing jump shot as time expired.
There was however a bright side to the game. Through three quarters Wall dominated a porous New Orleans defense, scoring 29 points and making me wonder how much longer Chris Paul will be able to hold the title of undisputed best point guard. I'm not going to talk about Wall too much, but he's a fantastic talent. His crossover gives me goose bumps. Once he finds his jump shot he's going to be nearly impossible to stop.
But I digress. Quincy Pondexter shut down Wall in the fourth quarter, holding him to only two points. His superior size and length frustrated him and disappointed those in attendance who wanted to continue watching the John Wall show.
Monty Williams would later remark on his pleasure with Pondexter's ability to guard one's, two's and three's, but not without checking the rookies ego. Although he has the ability, Williams noted, it remains to be seen whether or not he can actually do it. Seems to me like he can, but the real test will be in the regular season.
I also asked Williams about Julian Wright and got an answer I wasn't quite prepared for. With a scowl on his face that said more about his displeasure that any words, it was clear he was unhappy with the fourth year forwards absense. Williams added, "It is what it is." It wasn't an odd response considering Julian's struggles during the regular season, but it is very rare for NBA rotational players to attend summer league each of their first four years.
Regardless, it would make sense for Julian to be here, both for him and the team. He's been regressing for years and it would make sense to want to spend as much time with Monty as possible. Yes, he would have been heckled by the crowd, just like last year, but what's more important, avoiding scrutiny or improving as a player?
Let's rock some bullets-
- Javale McGee dominated the Hornets centers, but it really doesn't matter too much because none of them have much of a chance of being on the opening day roster, especially after Aaron Gray re-signed.
- Maurice Ager had a solid game, finishing with 23 points on only 12 shots, but he's really a liability on defense. It's too bad because you can tell he's a smart veteran player who attacks the rim hard every chance he gets. Still it wouldn't surprise me to see him on the Hornets opening day roster.
- Brackins really takes a lot of jump shots. I asked Monty about it and he didn't seem concerned, responding "Did you see him shoot?". I told him I did, but was concerned at the lack of his low post game. He didn't seem to be and he's a much smarter basketball mind than I, so let's leave it at that.
- Reigning NCAA leading scorer Aubrey Coleman sure is good at putting the ball in the basket. It's too bad that he can't do anything else particularly well. The offense was stagnant when he had the ball and more often than not he just dribbled around then then hoisted up a jumper. It worked well for him as he finished with 15 points on 7 shots.
- Hines had a good game, finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds on only 7 shots. Defensively he was not adequate.
Gotta run. Good night.

I finally figured out who Craig Brackins reminds me of - and it's more his physical stature and the way he moves and shoots than actual skills. He looks like Rashard Lewis. He's got the same build, takes a shot way above his head, and though he steps into the shot every time, he does it quickly and short of to the side. Its bizarrely similar to Lewis.
Let's just hope he can be anywhere near as effective shooting as Lewis has been.

Rocking bullets about The Bullets rocking us. I get it. I see your game, and I like it.
Thoughts on Coleman being guard 4/5?
At this point I'll take good Pondexter news over good Brackins news. We need Pondexter more if we are to trade Peja.
Poor Sonderleiter. I like the heart in that Peter Tork looking fella. Tork coached basketball, incidentally.

Well, well, well, look who's a baller now...It's none other than Chicago's own Javale McGee. Yes that's right Javale "Crab Legz" McGee is a straight up baller, and much of his success is due to CP3 Jr., John Wall.
Like I said last season McGee > Gray and now McGee >>> Gray. So while our vertically challenged center is shoving corn bread down his throat, Crab Legz is stuffing Spalding down our hoop, two-fold. Just something for you Gray fans to think about.

JCS: agreed. I've never been the least bit stoked about Gray. I was hoping we didn't re-sign him.

Hey Ryan,
Have you heard anything about the Hornet's being interested in Ajinca from the Mavs? Seems like a decent cheap 11th man

"Defensively he was not adequate"
Aren't boxscores funny? Watching the game I didn't think McGee had anywhere near the game the boxscore shows he did. For everything he did right on the offensive end, he had a string of stupid fouls and goaltends on the defensive end, and whined about every one.

I *did* mostly watch during the Hornets huge runs in the 2nd and 4rd, which might have colored my opinion of the game however...

I'm pretty sure no one ever suggested Aaron Gray was better than McGee.

Good find, QueenBee.
It's to read accurate, positive things amid the accurate and speculative negativity out there.
I can't wait to get some wins and send some idiots back to their holes where they can rot silently, at least for a bit.

@Caleb
I've gone back in forth with Ryan/Joe about who's better than Gray since last season. If I remember correctly they don't like Ryan Hollins, Channing Frye, or Crab Legz over Gray. Anyway, I just got back from the clubs when I wrote that. I was kind of fired up.

I think Hollins equates to Gray. I think Channing Frye is better than Gray, but I also don't think Frye is worth anything like what he's getting paid.
Crab Legz, on the other hand, is destroyed on a regular basis by gray. He fills plates and plates with their remains.

Hmmm I think Channing Frye has gotten much more of a chance as far as P-T Than Gray and so comparing their effectiveness might be somewhat skewed. As far as Hollins goes though, I think Gray is a much better dose of what the hornets need. While they may be equally effective for their teams Gray is far more of the "toughness and muscle" the hornets really seemed to be otherwise lacking. Watching the physical bigs around the league push the hornets front line around stopped for the most part when Gray was inserted. Im not sure Hollins would have the same effect on our team.
Comparing players is useful but sometimes the context of their situation and the team dynamic players a larger role towards player's success.

LOL...Now that I think about it, Gray could eat all these players alive.

Could we sign Gerald Green? Right now we're looking for minimum contracts, and while he seems to be a replica of Julian Wright (minus defense), I think he'd be better suited than Wright due to his overabundance of confidence, versus the lack thereof with Wright.
I was impressed with his performance with the Mavs, and I think with his speed we can put him in as a 2 or 3. Sure he's not really dynamic and there's no more 'potential' (same can be said of JuJu), but I think with Collison/CP, they have a great slashing player as a tool for offense.

Definitely curious to see if New Orleans has a spot for Maurice Ager. He showed he could play the 1, 2, and 3 and looked very explosive taking the defender to the basket at will. I was curious to see if he would be a facilitator and if he would pass the ball at all and suprisingly so the offense ran the best when he ran the point. 6-5 wing man that you can have the offense run through my not be a bad guy to add the rotation....
