Scouting reports: Bobby Brown and Darius Songaila

With many thanks to our comrades in the TrueHoop Network, we've got the 411 on Bobby Brown and Darius Songaila, who the Hornets acquired today from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Antonio Daniels.

First the skinny on Brown, courtesy of Zach Harper of Cowbell Kingdom:

Outside of being the King of R&B, Bobby Brown is one of the more fun third string point guards you can have on your team. He doesn't look like much but his production on the court is actually pretty astonishing. He's lightning quick with the ball and fairly good at freeing up space to get off his jumper, which looks a little more like Shawn Marion than it does Steve Kerr. I wouldn't exactly call him a defensive wizard by any means because he often gets torched while trying to stop the ball. But his resilient demeanor helps him forget about it and continue to play with confidence on the other end.

He's a volume scorer when he's out there but does so in a peculiar way. He does a great job of knocking down shots with the clock running down. In fact, that's when he's at his best. He doesn't do a great job of distributing the ball but he also doesn't really turn it over that much, either. He's the sparkplug you want for a garbage time player- a three-point shooter with the swagger to keep the crowd interested.

The report on Songaila comes courtesy of Kyle Weidie of Truth About It:

Hornets trade Anonio Daniels to Timberwolves for Darius Songaila and Bobby Brown

Trade reported this afternoon on NOLA.com.

Real quick reaction to this deal since I'm on my way out the door. Let's talk $$ first...

The Hornets rid themselves of Antonio Daniels' $6.6 million expiring contract. Bobby Brown has just one season left on his deal, and is owed $736,420. Darius Songaila will make $4,526,000 this season, and has a player option worth $4,818,000 for 2010-11.

So the immediate savings for the Hornets are about $1.3 million, only double that because they also save on the luxury tax penalty.

From NOLA.com:

The Hornets' current payroll, not counting the salary of Ike Diogu, which has not yet been made public, now stands at $73,656,549, down from $74,994,129 before the trade.

The team is still above the salary cap threshold of $69.96 million for this season. If the team does not get under that limit by the end of the season, New Orleans will be taxed $1 for each $1 over the limit.

Predicting the Hornet's Rotation

View Ryan Schwan's profilePosted by Ryan Schwan September 07, 2009

Every season I do a post that tries to project the wins the team will earn over the course of the upcoming season, using the production from the players the season before and the Wages of Wins “WP48” stat.   Two seasons ago my projection was fairly close.  Last season, it was really wrong, as I expected Chandler to give the Hornets 73 games and something like the production he’d given them the previous two years.  Instead, Chandler didn’t do jack, Peja broke down, Julian regressed, Butler gave less than Peterson the year before,  Brown replaced Pargo and somehow was worse, and Hilton Armstrong  . . . well, I’ve said enough about him.

Byron Scott Crystal Ball

Anyways, that’s enough excuses.  The problem with the projection I gave last year wasn’t really the metric, the main culprit was my faulty projection of the minutes we could expect from the players.  So this season I decided to try two new things:

  1. Using a Crystal Ball to see the Future.
  2. Running my minutes by all of you to get feedback before I ran the numbers.

I’m sure that’ll work out great and produce an infallible result.  So here is my minutes chart,  followed by my reasoning.  Feel free to rip into it.

Establishing Market Value: The Ball Handlers

View Ryan Schwan's profilePosted by Ryan Schwan May 27, 2009

In my last installment of Valuations of Hornet's players under contract for 2009-2010, I'll focus on the team's ballhandlers.  One of the oddities(and weaknesses perhaps) about last year's Hornets was just how easily the players fit into my three favorite categories of Bigs, Wings and Ballhandlers.  They just weren't a really versatile bunch, with only two players who could be considered cross-over players:  Julian Wright, who was a wing sometimes used as a big, and Devin Brown, who was a ballhandler sometimes used as a wing . . . or the other way around . . . it's hard to tell when a guy is not particularly good at either role.

Anyways, after this, we'll get to a post elaborating what I feel the Hornets need.  If I think the team can(or should) try to get back to contender status in a single season, and then begin talking about potential trades, free agent signings, and draft stuff.  Away we go:

Breaking News: Mike James traded for Antonio Daniels

View Niall Doherty's profilePosted by Niall Doherty December 10, 2008

This just in from NOLA.com:

The New Orleans Hornets are close to finalizing a three-team trade deal this morning that will send Mike James to the Washington Wizards in exchange for guard Antonio Daniels.

The trade deal also includes the Memphis Grizzlies. Since Tuesday, the Wizards with the Grizzlies have been trade negotiations.

The Grizzlies are trying to obtain a conditional draft pick from the Wizards.

Initial thoughts: This is a great trade for us. James and Daniels have almost identical contracts (about $6.5 million owed to both this season and next), so we're not losing much there. Meanwhile, the 6-4 Daniels should be able to come in and give us reliable minutes at point guard, his natural position. He has career averages of 7.9 points and 3.5 assists, and was averaging 5.1 and 3.6 in 22 minutes a night for the Wiz this season.

Antonio DanielsRelevant linkage as I find it:

UPDATE: From the Washington Post...

The Wizards will acquire guards Javaris Crittenton (Memphis) and Mike James (New Orleans). The Hornets will get Antonio Daniels from the Wizards and possibly a conditional draft pick from Memphis. The Grizzlies would get the conditional first round pick they sent to Washington for Juan Carlos Navarro before last season.
