My Very Own Made Up Hornets Trade Rumors

View Joe Gerrity's profilePosted by Joe Gerrity June 23, 2010

Hornets fans must be so sick of talking about Chris Paul rumors. I know I am, so I've decided to start making stuff up to balance out the universe. It's pretty unfair that all the major "rumors" have the Hornets superstar heading elsewhere. Pretty clearly the time of Hornets fans would be better spent thinking about potential trades that actually help the team.

Made up rumor number one: LeBron to New Orleans

Does LeBron James Feel a Sense of Urgency?

View Ryan Schwan's profilePosted by Ryan Schwan May 10, 2010

There's a sense of urgency in Cleveland this year.  The city knows this is the best chance they've had at a title in a looooong time.  Coach Mike Brown, who has taken a tremendous amount of criticism, needs a title to validate his career.  General Manager Danny Ferry needs to win this year because his team, particularly its older big men, is constructed to win now around a superstar. A superstar that famously may not be there next year.

There may be a fly in that championship ointment, though.  There is one person in Cleveland who doesn't have a reason to feel the same sort of urgency:  LeBron James.

Salary Cap Stuff and Eastern Conference Predictions

Salary Cap Stuff

Don't get too excited, but it appears that the that the NBA salary cap and luxury tax lines are dropping less than expected. It's now being projected that the cap will fall from 57.7 million to 56.1 million. The 1.6 million dollar decrease is millions less than most front offices had anticipated.

The expected luxury tax hasn't been revealed, and likely won't be until the official salary cap is set. That said, I project it to be just over 68 million, given the historical correlation between the two. This years luxury tax line was set at 69.92 million.

As it stands right now the Hornets have ten players under contract for approximately 72.2 million dollars.

Game On: Cavaliers @ Hornets

LeBron James vs. Chris PaulWhat can the Hornets do for an encore?

We witnessed perhaps their best game of the season in Chris Paul's return against the Mavericks on Monday, and now the NBA's best team comes to town with a comeback story of their own. Game tips a 7 Central. Should be fun.

The Cavs are 56-15 on the season, 25-11 on the road and are riding a 7-game winning streak. They blew out the Pistons in Cleveland on Sunday with LeBron James barely breaking a sweat. Tonight they'll have Zydrunas Ilgauskas back and available to play, despite trading him away at the deadline (that's called a loophole, kids). Shaquille O'Neal is still out with a thumb injury.

These two teams met in Cleveland last month, with the Cavs winning 105-95 despite a 37-point explosion from Marcus Thornton that surely left some scout reconsidering his job security. The LeBron's have not won in New Orleans since 2006, which is the longest they've gone without winning on another team's home floor.

Numbers:

Pace: Cavaliers 93.2 (25th), Hornets 95.0 (15th)
Offensive Efficiency: Cavaliers 109.2 (3rd), Hornets 104.5 (16th)
Defensive Efficiency: Cavaliers 100.8 (7th), Hornets 106.6 (19th)

Game On: Hornets @ Cavaliers

James PoseyHornets back on the road and a big test awaiting them in Cleveland tonight, their first meeting of the season with the Cavaliers. Game tips at 6 Central.

The Cavs have the best record in the League at 43-14 and are a formidable 24-4 at home. They do come into tonight's game with a season-high three-game losing streak (Den, @Cha, @Orl) but that's probably more bad news than good for the Hornets.

Cleveland made a splash at last week's trade deadline by bringing in Antawn Jamison, and he played much better in Orlando on Sunday (19 points, 9-14 FGs, 8 boards) after going 0-for-12 from the field in his Cavs debut against the Bobcats on Friday. Jamison is expected to make his first start for Cleveland tonight, pushing J.J. Hickson to the bench. (There's also a chance Hickson may not play at all due to illness.)

Oh, and that LeBron James kid has been playing some good basketball: averages of 33.4 points, 10.6 assists, 7.1 rebounds and 2.4 steals this month.

Numbers:

Pace: Cavaliers 93.2 (25th), Hornets 94.8 (17th)
Offensive Efficiency: Cavaliers 108.6 (4th), Hornets 104.5 (13th)
Defensive Efficiency: Cavaliers 101.2 (7th), Hornets 105.1 (18th)
