Summer League: Blazers beat the Hornets

View Ryan Schwan's profilePosted by Ryan Schwan July 13, 2010

With Collison off to get his college degree and Marcus Thornton sitting on the bench watching, the only reason to watch the game was the Hornets 2 rookies.  Unfortunately, after a nice start, Craig Brackins hurt his ankle and was out the rest of the game, so we were left with the Quincy Pondexter and Aubrey Coleman show.

Coleman was pretty good, being much more aggressive this game than he had in the previous two.  He essentially gave up on the whole "point guard" thing and went Jannero Pargo out there, taking long range pull-ups and off the dribble threes.  And, like Pargo did every 5th game, he was raining points.  He had 19 points on 13 shots, 5 reb, 3 steals, 1 assist, and 3 turnovers.

Quincy, on the other hand, didn't show any remarkable scoring talents, but he continued to come up with intelligent hustle plays.  As the game wore on, they tried to feature him more as a scorer, but it wasn't really working - he's not really a one on one creator.  He finished with 11 points on 10 shots, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers.

Brackins, before he got hurt, drilled three three-point shots in a row off of pick and pop shots.  His feet were set, and he let fly and got nothing but net.  Let's welcome him back as Channing Frye.  Let's hope we don't see Antoine Walker again anytime soon.

That's really all there is to say.  Dragovic was okay, playing smart, and hitting shots, though at that point it was too late.

For the Blazers, Patty Mills looked nice.  Have a good night.

Determining a Rival for the Hornets

View Joe Gerrity's profilePosted by Joe Gerrity July 09, 2010

According to Wikipedia, which obviously is the end-all source on everything, the Hornets don't have a rival. That makes me remarkably sad considering the deep seeded mild anger that I feel toward opposing ball clubs. If we don't have a rival, how will anyone know which games matter most at the beginning of the season? Sure every game matters, but there is something to be said for manufacturing drama, especially on a sports blog.

Since the dawn of sports, long term rivalries have existed for a number of reasons, including...

  • The two teams that are competing have fan bases that are in close geographical proximity to one another, often leading for fans to root for one or the other.
  • The teams are thrust into competing in crucial games year after year in which only one can prevail
  • Both teams have an excellent player whose accomplishments for whatever reason are always compared to those of another team's excellent player.
  • They are a great marketing tool for teams to entice fans to come to the arena, even if a season isn't going quite as planned.
  • The media needs stuff to write about, and the fans want a reason to care more.

Frankly I don't want to start a discussion about who Hornets fans like the least, but that's exactly what needs to happen to determine a rival. Lot's of teams have angered the Bees over the years, and it's time fans let them know exactly how they feel.

Monty Williams Appears Set to Coach New Orleans

View Ryan Schwan's profilePosted by Ryan Schwan June 05, 2010

And it looks like the Hornets' coaching search is over.  ESPN is reporting that the Hornets and Portland assistant coach Monty Williams have come to an agreement now that Tom Thibodeau appears to have chosen Chicago over the Big Easy.  From the very beginning, it was reported that the Hornets wanted Thibodeau, but would be happy to go after Monty Williams if that didn't pan out.  It didn't.

Welcome to New Orleans, Mr. Williams.

Now, I'll admit that I know next to nothing about our new coach. I don't really pay a ton of attention to assistant coaches, and honestly would have a hard time naming all of the Hornets assistant coaches without thinking about it for a minute or so.  I always forget about Charlie Parker.  Sorry, Charlie.

Happily, our good friend and fellow Truehoop Network member Ezra Caraeff of The Portland Roundball Society kindly offered to give us an overview of our new coach.

Enjoy:

CP3 Gets His Wish, Monty Williams to Coach the Hornets?

View Joe Gerrity's profilePosted by Joe Gerrity June 03, 2010

With tip off of the NBA finals approaching, and numerous reports of a declined offer, it appears that Tom Thibodeau will not become the next head coach of the New Orleans Hornets. Good riddance. Who wants a guy with no playing experience whatsoever anyway?

Instead Monty Williams, reportedly Chris Paul's top choice, will be offered the position, according to a number of sources.

ESPN’s Marc Stein:

The Hornets don’t want to let their coaching search drag beyond this week and plan to offer the job instead to Portland Trail Blazers assistant Monty Williams if Thibodeau, Boston’s defensive specialist, doesn’t accept by Thursday, according to sources.

NBA Playoffs: Western Conference Predictions

View Joe Gerrity's profilePosted by Joe Gerrity April 15, 2010

It's playoff prediction time here at Hornets247. No, the Bees won't be part in the postseason, but that doesn't mean that we can't have some fun talking about the 16 teams that have earned a shot to compete for the title. The seeding is set, players and coaches are preparing, and we're predicting.

Ryan Schwan: If ever there was a time when seeding was unimportant, it was this year in the Western Conference.  Seven games difference between the 1 seed and the 8 seed?  Point differentials that only vary by 2.6?  Crazy place, the Western Conference.
