West playoff field already set?

From John Hollinger at ESPN's TrueHoop:

It’s not quite game over in the Western Conference playoff race, but we’re rapidly getting there. Monday night's wins by Portland (over Memphis) and San Antonio (over New Orleans) sucked most of the remaining drama out of the chase for the final two playoff spots. The Grizzlies and Hornets badly needed wins to keep pace in the West; with home losses by both, neither has more than a 5 percent chance of making the postseason, according to the Playoff Odds.

Thornton a force off the bench

From Elias at ESPN.com:

Marcus Thornton scored 30 points off the bench for the Hornets in their loss to the Spurs on Monday. It was the second game this season in which Thornton, a rookie, scored 30-plus points off the bench; the other was six days ago when he dropped in 37 at Cleveland. The last rookie to produce 30-point games off the bench within one week was Michael Brooks of the San Diego Clippers in October 1980.

Elias also has a blurb on Collison's performance last night:

Darren Collison had 15 assists on Monday, the most by a rookie against the Spurs since the Bullets' Doug Overton had 18 assists on Dec. 1, 1992.

Sean Marks Player Blog - March 1 edition

From Sean Marks' latest blog over at Hornets.com, emphasis mine:

As I write this we are coming off undoubtedly one of the best wins of this season. On Friday in front of a great crowd at the Hive the Hornets handed the Magic a rare loss. It was great to see the guys rally from a large deficit and keep fighting until the bitter end. There was another huge individual performance from D West, who hit the 40-point mark for the second time this year. Also it was the first chance for the newest member of the team, Aaron Gray, to step out on the floor and really contribute. Aaron – more commonly known in the locker room as “Tiny,” played a terrific second half in really making life tough for Dwight Howard.

Injuries are certainly part of the game and as all of our fans know we have had our fair share this year. Fingers are crossed that we all remain healthy and the guys that are currently out return soon so the team will be at full strength for our final stretch before the playoffs.

Collison's first month as a starter

From Elias over at ESPN.com:

Darren Collison finished his first month as an NBA starter by scoring 35 points in the Hornets' 108-100 loss at Dallas. Collison averaged 21.6 points and 8.3 assists for February. Only one other rookie in the last 25 years had scoring and assist averages that high in the same month (minimum: 3 games): Allen Iverson in April 1997 (33.6 PPG, 8.7 APG).

Rookie Watch: Who's hot?

View Ryan Schwan's profilePosted by Ryan Schwan February 26, 2010 at 12:53 Central

David Thorpe of Scouts Inc, talks about this season's rookies on ESPN Insider.  The hottest rookie right now?  Darren Collison.

If I told you that the starting point guard for New Orleans is averaging 20.8 points, 8.9 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game this month, you probably wouldn't be surprised because the Hornets have the game's best point guard in Chris Paul. But those are Collison's numbers, of course, in place of the injured Paul.

The rookie has scored 22 or more points in five of the Hornets' past six games and added at least nine assists in each of those high-scoring games. In the other game, he scored 18 points and handed out 12 assists. He has been productive while also playing great in the clutch.

He's not in CP3's league -- in that six-game span, he had 35 turnovers -- but for a point guard who is being asked to do so much, the Hornets can live with that. My favorite part of watching the Hornets play is during timeouts, when Collison gets counseled by Paul.

Marcus Thornton Would Like You to Know That it is His World

View Ryan Schwan's profilePosted by Ryan Schwan February 24, 2010 at 11:02 Central

Ticktock at Hornet's Hype talks about Marcus Thornton and his outstanding performance in the Hornets' loss to the Cavaliers.

At one point, someone on Twitter mentioned that they weren’t watching the game, just looking at the boxscore, and asked how Thornton was scoring. I just sort of laughed. Because “how was he not scoring?” was more the question. Threes, mid-range jumpers, getting to the rim, and-1s, free throws, steals, fast breaks. I don’t think he had a dunk, but at 37 points, who even cares? His team didn’t come away with the win, but he outscored LeBron James by 17 in his own building.

This is our Lagniappe section, where we list mostly Hornets-related bits and pieces that we find online. This stuff isn't quite newsworthy, and we're too lazy to blog about it, but some folks might find it interesting so we list it here.
